Behind every great magician is a partner who makes the impossible look effortless.

For my grandfather, Philip Morris, that partner was my grandmother, Amy Morris. These are rare photographs of the two of them performing together. In one, he appears to float her in mid-air at an outdoor show. I believe they were both still in their twenties.

They were married, and they were partners in every sense. In the company they went on to build, Amy Morris ran the retail side while Philip Morris ran the wholesale division. The showmanship you see here is the foundation it was all built on.

Every showman starts somewhere. For my grandfather, Philip Morris, it started with a ventriloquist figure and a microphone.

This photograph shows him as a young man performing ventriloquism on the air. The flag on the microphone reads WGFG, and the side plate reads ABC. Ventriloquism on the radio sounds like a contradiction, but it was a genuine sensation in that era, when listeners tuned in by the millions to hear a performer and his wooden partner trade jokes.

The skills he built here, timing, character, and the nerve to perform live, carried him through everything that followed: the magic shows, the ghost shows, children's television and eventually Dr. Evil himself.

Long before streaming, if you wanted to be scared out of your seat you bought a ticket to a spook show.

My grandfather, Philip Morris, toured the country as Dr. Evil, headlining "Dr. Evil and His Terrors of the Unknown," a live stage show of magic, monsters and mayhem that played movie theatres ahead of a horror film. Spook shows like his were a traveling American tradition for decades, part magic act, part haunted house, and part midnight movie.

He told me there were usually two theatres in town, and that every show sold out to standing room only. The company would perform, start the film, then run all of their equipment to the second theatre and do the whole show again.

Selling those tickets was a performance of its own. Swipe through to see the lobby display promising the Mummy and King Kong in person, and my grandfather driving through town blindfolded, usually with the local television station along for the ride.

And then there is the photo of a very young Philip Morris being buried alive. He told me many times over the years how foolish it was to attempt that trick, and how lucky he was to have survived it.

My grandfather, Philip Morris, created Dr. Evil in the 1950's, then brought him to Charlotte TV as host of Dr. Evil's Horror Theatre on WBTV from 1962 to 1969.

Three generations later, the family is still making monsters.
