is a generational talent. Every time I’ve seen him I’ve been moved to tears and last night’s festival set was no exception. He closed out the opening day with one of the most powerful performances I’ve ever seen. I was leaning against a rear cement wall, where a young man was sitting up top.

The intensity and fire coming from the stage with palpable.Kamasi is a master of mood manipulation with his increases and decreases in volume and pace and beautiful melodies.

He was playing shortly after the devastating news of the death of his longtime friend and collaborator Ryan Porter.

At the end of the set with tears in his eyes, he thanked the crowd. I turned to the young man next to me, and asked for a hug, a potentially awkward moment with a total stranger. He put out his arms, and as we hugged, we simultaneously said ‘God bless you.’ We surprised each other and I said that’s because we both meant it sincerely.

We exchanged accolades about how Kamasi’s music was spiritual, otherworldly and powerful, and I busted out in tears. That’s the power of music and the power of Kamasi Washington.

The latest internet phenom is 𝐀ɴɢɪɴᴇ ᴅᴇ 𝐏ᴏɪᴛʀɪɴᴇ and their KEXP video has 14 MM views and counting in just 3 months. Their music is pretty cool, but the costumes, to me, are a novelty, maybe interesting when I see them at Newport, but I'm skeptical on the repeat interest. Fad or future?

O̲p̲i̲n̲i̲o̲n̲:̲ ̲L̲i̲v̲e̲ ̲m̲u̲s̲i̲c̲ ̲i̲s̲ ̲b̲e̲s̲t̲ ̲w̲h̲e̲n̲ ̲y̲o̲u̲ ̲h̲a̲v̲e̲ ̲a̲ ̲v̲i̲s̲u̲a̲l̲ ̲c̲o̲n̲n̲e̲c̲t̲i̲o̲n̲ ̲w̲i̲t̲h̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲ ̲a̲r̲t̲i̲s̲t̲s̲—̲w̲h̲e̲n̲ ̲y̲o̲u̲ ̲c̲a̲n̲ ̲s̲e̲e̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲i̲r̲ ̲e̲y̲e̲s̲ ̲a̲n̲d̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲i̲r̲ ̲e̲m̲o̲t̲i̲o̲n̲s̲ ̲a̲s̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲y̲ ̲p̲l̲a̲y̲.̲

Why do I say this now? I've seen several bands over the past several years that play in masks or costumes, including Here Come the Mummies and Glass Beams. The first time seeing them is great, and the musicianship is top-notch, but it's hard to be a fan-addict when there's no connection.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

One of my new favorite keyboard players, Jesus Molina, improvising and interpreting my all-time favorite "What Is Hip?" from Tower of Power in no time flat. He's uber-talented, and this is fun to watch, but I don't agree with the premise that he "learned" the song—I think he got the gist and took it from there. What do you think?

Jesús Molina takes on Tower of Power’s iconic funk anthem, “What Is Hip?,” learning it as fast as possible. Watch Jesús lock into the groove, tackle the rhyt...
