I don't know if you can see the vision but all we can see are spring flowers galore when we look at this table of seedlings hardening off! Scabiosa, yarrow, sweet william, statice. 🥳 eek! This is about half of the plugs that will be planted out in the next two weeks. They'll get snug and rooted in over the weeks before frost and then covered for the winter. All winter long they'll grow a strong root system and come spring: BAM!

The fields are doing their best to keep churning out flowers but the end of the season does approach! We still have craft shows, workshops and all the fall planting out to do but a change in temps and pace is always lovely.

👌🏻A flower and a little buddy. Why are we okay with seeing a bug here or there on our flowers? Well, my friend, imagine what goes into ensuring there is not a single living thing on an internationally shipped flower ☣️🫣🚫

🌱So while sustainably grown, low spray local flowers can sustain some amount of life, that's a compromise we feel is worth it for safe, not covered in pesticides and herbicides blooms.

🌻👍🏻 Here's to the local flower movement! Should 80% of our nation's flowers be shipped in from overseas? Grown with often exploitative labor? Covered in chemicals? We say...nope.

❤️ So what can a consumer do? Seek out local flowers for your table instead of grabbing grocery store bouquets every time. Ask your florist if they buy locally! Support the local flower farms around you by buying CSA memberships, attending workshops and events and visiting their farm stands.

Maybe it isn't the most pressing issue in our world, but it's one worth considering! 🌼

Earlier in the week I took this photo of a marigold bunch freshly harvested with just a touch of misty rain. I think sometimes in the lists of tasks on the farm and the bunches and rows of flowers we grow, I do tend to forget that an individual stem of a single type of flower is worth examining and enjoying.

A marigold reminds me a little bit of crepe paper: the fancy kind that you can bend and stretch a little and make things out of, or decorate for a party. Or maybe it reminds me of wads of tissue paper sticking out of a birthday present. Either way, good things! It seems to remind me of something nice headed our way.

Going to try to do a better job of getting up close every once in a while and remembering these created things are thoughtfully made, unique and distinct, worth examining and remarking upon. When possible. 😂😜😅
