Feeling a bit Goldilocks about the weather. After last year‘s incinerating hot spring and drought, I should be wildly thankful for all of this rain. And I am. And so is Mike’s lawn. And so is the water table. And so are the transplants.
And as I write this, the magic of listing gratitudes again has its effect on formerly-dreary me.

We set up our bulk Party Buckets slightly differently from some growers. While a little bit if everything in the each bucket looks Gorgeous and like an instant arrangement, I find that it makes it more difficult for the user to separate things and divvy them up for their project. Instead, we clump each kind of flower together- meaning if you get more than one bucket, you will find each variety in only 1-2 spots, but lots of it. When you start your project, you can pull the whole pile out and lay it on a table to disperse through all your vessels.
Those of you who have purchased our Party Buckets: what do you think? Would you prefer that we assort everything in each bucket or do you like things clumped by kind?

Just a random THANK YOU post to everyone who brought us glassware during our Earth Day vase recall. It was amazing to have Beth & Marcy bring back such a haul of gorgeous vessels. We are having a great time re-filling them.

Our township recycling hauler is no longer accepting glass recycling, and this recall/recycle/reuse feels more important than ever.

Are you cleaning out your shelves? We are always happy to recycle clear vases or jars (label removed). You are welcome to bring them to our Open Farm Day AUGUST 2 or email us to schedule another time.

Flower Lab. That’s what Lucy has coined all my nerdy experiments. To the inquisitive soul, farming is a dream. There is ALWAYS something to learn, something to improve.
We’ve got three main experiments this year:
1. Improving our succession plan aster varieties for continuous bloom with fewer seeding dates.
2. Figuring out which marigolds do not need staking for faster harvest.
3. Trialing sunflower varieties for downy mildew resistance plus strong necks.
All these experiments take time and attention. They are just for internal knowledge, to make us better farmers and mage our farm run smoother. If we remain dedicated to these inquiries, we can yield some amazing information. How lucky are we to get to try all these things?

It’s hard to see that most of our rows are planted with annuals because the grass paths are growing faster than we can keep up with. While I am certainly concerned for disease and delayed flowering, this rainy spring has been fantastic for several things.
1. Plant establishment is incredible; basically zero loss at transplant.
2. The annual rye is so thick that no weeds can germinate in our paths.
3. The June flowers are towering, literally several feet taller than dry years.
4. My nerves are calmer because I don’t have irrigation alarms going off a zillion times a day.

As they say to preschoolers: “you get what you get and don’t pitch a fit.” So I’m really focusing on the positives of this wet spring.

I have unexpectedly stepped into a new little role: cheerleader and mamabird to my consulting clients. It 100% makes my day to get messages of "I made tenure," or photos of a first vanload to supermarket, or even a cool logo farm tee in the mail. I am a proud mom watching these farmers grow their businesses, prioritize their personal lives, make big career advancements. Even the mundane "thanks for the dianthus variety recommendations; they got us through a busy week" messages really make me feel like my work is meaningful and helpful. The bigger ones "I got childcare" or "I quite my other job" make my heart sing for these brave farmers.

If you're out there wondering about working with me- check out our consulting page on our website: https://www.rootsflowerfarm.com/consulting We do this work in wintertime, but start intake all year. And if I've worked with you in the past, know that I'm literally thinking of every single on of you and cheering from afar.

It’s been a long while since nearly the whole gang was in one place. Reflecting on my gratitudes as I wait out another storm. This group gives me a lot to be grateful for. Our newest is in year two, most senior employee in year nine. What that means as a boss is monumental: they know how to do things, where to put things, what we call things…they know so many things!! To an introvert like me, it means less talking and explaining which is a dream. Yesterday we had our annual supermarket refresh meeting as we launch bouquet time. It was struck by how engaged, ready and eager this dream team is to crush 2025. Now that’s something to be grateful for.

I'm getting excited to see you flower farmers in New Mexico! Have you registered for the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, Inc. North American Conference yet? We are planning a little family getaway, and I think you should do the same! For those of you who want to get nerdy with me, my session will be all about financial metrics and margins. We track a variety of metrics every year and they have greatly improved our profitability, budgeting accuracy, and my overall comfort with our farm finance. If you are new to bookkeeping, an outstanding place to start is last month's ASCFG Ask the Expert on Farm Bookkeeping by Jessica and Graham Chase from I might even make it a "prerequisite" for my talk, it was so good!

Yesterday’s orders included all the options. We customize Party Buckets as soft, bright, everything, anything, greens, or sometimes a particular theme. We have also begun asking how they will be used. A giant urn calls for towering stems where bud vases need something more petite. Making these overflowing buckets is my favorite. Thanks for all these orders so I can do the thing I love!!
