After ten years of development work, thousands of happy campers, community involvement, and the hard work of a dedicated staff, the owners of the campground at the Silver Spur Resort, formerly the Canton KOA, will be closing its books and terminating its ownership. In the near term, operations will hopefully continue until our lender takes over management.
About ten months ago, we sold the Q & Brew Restaurant, ranch house, and the Barn venue to Ron and Lana Gabriel and this decision in no way affects their continued operations and we wish them years of future success.
Our campground was designed and marketed primarily for families and travelers, and secondarily as a place for long term RV residences. Unfortunately, the segment of the market we focused on has gone through troubling times as travel costs increased and family camping has decreased. At the same time, operational costs continued to rise to the point where it became impossible to stay current with our financing.
For at least the last eight months we have tried to convince our lender, Huntington Bank, to put a management company in place for a seamless transition while the Resort operations are sold.
All attempts, including negotiating a sale with one of two cash buyers at the price requested by the lender, have been turned down by the USDA who underwrote the loan. It is truly an illogical situation where a lender favors a business to close, and property be foreclosed, than to negotiate a sale and participate in a willing transfer of an establishment while it still has value. There is no win for the lender here, nor for us, the community, or our guests and residents.
It is our continued hope that our actions through the bankruptcy court will force the lender to complete a sale soon so that operations can continue without effect.
