Harvard Square can trace its origins to 1636 when Harvard University was founded. Students have always needed “stuff”; for the past 383 years, slowly but surely, merchants have responded to those needs by clustering around the yard.
The business district, now clustered alongside both the “old” and the new yard, is comprised of approximately 44 acres and represents over one million square feet of retail, restaurant, professional service, office, cultural and social service space. Besides the University and First Parish Church, both founded in 1636, our oldest business is the Cambridge Savings Bank which was established in 1834. Cambridge Savings is followed by many 19th century businesses, including the Cambridge Center for Adult Education (1876), the Harvard Coop (1882), Leavitt & Peirce (1883) and the Cambridge Trust Company (1890).
Our oldest 20th century businesses include Felix Shoe Repair (1913), Brattle Square Florist (1917), the Grolier Poetry Book Shop (1927) and the Harvard Book Store (1932). We also pride ourselves on the longevity of our iconic restaurants, including the Hong Kong (1954) Pinocchio’s Pizza (1966), Harvest Restaurant (1970) and Grendel’s Den (1971).
The Harvard Square Business Association (HSBA) was established in 1910; its mission is to “promote commerce in Harvard Square while being good stewards of the public space”. The Square is an authentic urban place where all are welcomed; from global leaders to homeless men and women, from runaway kids to those of privilege...residents, students, teachers, families, street performers, skateboarders and visitors from near and far...pedestrians, bicyclists, cars, buses, trucks, scooters, vans and motorcycles....there is space for everyone.
