We had a fabulous time at the orchid festival yesterday even though it was particularly warm outside, we enjoyed the cooling in the green houses! I could have stayed in there all day looking at these beauties! It was difficult to narrow down my purchases but I came home with some really beautiful cultivars.

This one's a personal favorite of mine, and she's a luminata. 'Dark Universe', a tall bearded iris bred by Keith Keppel in 2018. Deep concord purple standards with a whisper-thin blue-white edge, and velvety concord falls with that classic luminata glow, a soft white area beside the beard where the color seems to light up from within.

She's picked up some real recognition too, Honorable Mention in 2021 and an Award of Merit in 2023.

Luminata is one of my favorite patterns, that glowing quality around the beard just gets me every time. Show me your favorite luminata you grow in the comments!

For all of you who love the moody, dramatic ones: meet 'Smoky Shadows', a tall bearded iris bred by Richard Tasco in 2010. Brownish-brick red standards sit above falls in a deep, velvety cherry-black, heavily ruffled and dark as they come. Slight fragrance, and she picked up an Honorable Mention in 2013 to boot.

If you're drawn to the darker, moodier side of the iris world, this one's for you.

Anyone else obsessed with the dark, velvety blooms? Drop your favorites below!

Happy Holidays from USPS

From October 4th to January 17th, USPS is temporarily raising rates to account for peak season demand. Prices are going up for everything except international services and Media Mail.

Priority Mail Flat Rate

Large Flat Rate Boxes: $1.75 increase
All other Flat Rate products: $0.85 increase

Once again thanks usps. I’ll hold my breath for when they lower these “temporary” increases. 🤣🙃

'By Starlight', a tall bearded iris bred by Thomas Johnson in 2023, so she's a newer one and definitely a unique color combo. Flesh pink standards sit above falls in a rich, royal purple with a lighter purple edge, and the beard goes orange to lavender as it goes. Slight sweet fragrance to round her out. Such a dreamy contrast between that soft pink top and the deep purple below.

What do you all think of this color combo?

This one's a showstopper: 'Hot Spice', an intermediate bearded iris bred by J. Terry Aitken in 1989. She's on the smaller side at 25 inches, but what she lacks in height she makes up for in color, warm chocolate brown standards over bright yellow falls, stitched in dark chocolate at the edge with a bold white flash at the beard. Looks like she was dipped in cinnamon and spice.

She's decorated too, Honorable Mention in 1991, Award of Merit in 1993, and topped it off with the Sass Medal in 1997.

That color combo is a total standout in the field. Anyone else drawn to warm, spicy tones like this one?
