Can you handle the heat?! Have you ever been in the grocery store or farmers market and wondered how hot a certain pepper was? This helpful guide breaks down the heat level of several common peppers.

The Scoville Heat Units (SHU) scale is used to measure the amount of capsaicin in peppers. Capsaicin is a chemical compound that gives peppers their heat.

So, how hot is that pepper? Here’s a list of a few common peppers and where they fall on the Scoville scale:

Bell peppers: 0 SHU
Poblano: 1,000–1,500 SHU
Jalapeño: 2,500–5,000 SHU
Serrano: 5,000–23,000 SHU
Tabasco: 30,000–50,000 SHU
Cayenne: 30,000–125,000 SHU
Habanero: 100,000–350,000 SHU
Ghost pepper: 1,000,000 SHU

Is it too late to grow sunflowers for the fall in Mississippi? The short answer is no!

Most ornamental and cut-flower sunflower varieties flower 60 days after planting on average. So, for most years, if seeds are planted by Aug. 15, you can enjoy these gorgeous flowers from late September to October.

The ornamental varieties have a wide range of sizes and colors. The plants can range from under 1 foot tall to 6 feet or more. And while yellow is probably the most popular color, other colors available are white, bronze, burgundy and orange.

For fall planting, we recommend 3- to 4-foot varieties in warm, autumnal colors. Sunflower seeds can be started in small containers using professional potting mix and grown as transplants. When the seedlings are about 4 inches tall -- and this will happen within about 10 days -- they can be transplanted to full sun planting areas.

Since sunflowers are large-seeded plants, we find that if seeds are directly planted into the garden, they will develop much quicker than those started in small containers and transplanted.
