Frustration has been a frequent visitor in the vineyard lately. A few weeks ago, we experienced another 2,4-D overspray event. Last year’s damage was difficult, but this year it affected not only the leaves but also many of the growing tips. In a year when we’re trying to establish strong trunks and reach the wire, watching growth stall has been discouraging.

I was reminded of a quote (thanks to my Pinterest quote block on my phone) from Frances Hodgson Burnett: ‘If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden.’

Gardens aren’t made up only of perfect blooms and easy seasons. They include storms, setbacks, and things we can’t control. Right now, I see vines that aren’t where I hoped they’d be. But if I look another way, I can also see resilience. I see roots still growing, trunks still strengthening, and plants doing their best to recover. Our job now is simple: water, fertilize, care for them, and trust the process.

Sometimes gardening—and farming—isn’t about producing growth. It’s about protecting it long enough for growth to happen again.
