June is PTSD Awareness Month

PTSD Awareness Month aims to increase public understanding of PTSD, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals affected by trauma to seek help. PTSD can result from a variety of traumatic experiences, including military combat, sexual or physical assault, serious accidents, natural disasters, and other life-threatening events.

The first major step toward national recognition occurred in 2010, when the U.S. Senate designated June 27 as National PTSD Awareness Day in honor of Staff Sergeant Joe Biel, a National Guard member who died by su***de after struggling with PTSD following two tours in Iraq
In 2014, the observance expanded to the entire month of June, allowing organizations and communities more time to educate the public, host events, and increase visibility for trauma survivors.

During PTSD Awareness Month, mental health professionals, veterans’ organizations, and advocacy groups run campaigns to educate the public, share resources, and provide support. Activities may include:

Virtual walks and exercise challenges to promote mental health awareness
PTSD screening events to encourage early detection and treatment
Social media campaigns using hashtags like
