She didn't call it self-care. She didn't call it anything.

She lit the candle. She used the good china. She wore the perfume for no one but herself.

The women who raised us were practicing something that predates every wellness trend by generations. The newest post from Before the Candle Is Lit is about what they knew that we're still learning to remember.

Nothing Here Is Random

MBW are my initials — Monique Brizz-Walker. They appear on every piece this brand has ever composed because everything here begins with something personal. MBW No. 5 marks my birth month. MBW No. 20 carries my birthdate. MBW Adrienne — the inaugural room spray — bears my baptismal name.

The Spring 2026 collection continues that lineage. MBW No. 3 encodes my mother's birth month. MBW No. 29 carries her birthdate. And MBW Liz — the room and linen spray composed in her image — bears her name.

She has been gone thirty-nine years. She is in every number.

This is not a candle collection. It is a record of the people who shaped me — made visible, made fragrant, made available to you.

I created this brand the way I move through the world — thoughtfully, with deep intention, fully present to every detail, and always with an open table. If you feel that here, you are exactly who this was made for.

By the time your event is announced, the groundwork for its success should already be in place — relationships deepened, early supporters engaged, staff aligned, outreach channels activated. Events that feel like they 'came together' are rarely accidents. They are the result of strategic work done quietly, well in advance, by leaders who understand that momentum is manufactured, not discovered.

Visibility is key as you seek to look to communicate beyond a random post about your upcoming event. Where you share information matters just as much as how you share it. Be Intentional.

A single email blast, a Facebook post, a note in the newsletter — these are not an outreach strategy. They are individual threads. An integrated approach weaves them together: the right message, through the right channel, reaching the right person at the right moment in their relationship with your organization. The difference in response is not incremental. It is transformational.

Not coordinating check-in. Not managing the silent auction. As participants — as people who believe in and are shaped by this mission. And for the people your organization serves: are they present as voices, as contributors, as the reason the room gathered? Or only as a story someone else tells on their behalf?

When staff are reduced to logistics and beneficiaries are reduced to testimonials, events lose something irreplaceable — the lived presence of the work itself. The organizations that design events where staff feel invested and beneficiaries feel honored, not displayed, create a different quality of experience. Donors feel it. Board members feel it. Everyone in the room feels it.
