“are we not strange,
curly,
spectacular things-
longing only to be known,
to have our hearts
sung back to us
when we might forget?”

The sweetest time of year in Vermont has just begun…the river and lake are the perfect temperature…our farmstands are packed full with every color imaginable of locally grown fruits and vegetables (along with our menu)…music nights are that warm-not-hot sweet spot…the gardens are glowing in all their wild abundance…the mornings have just started to have a crispness to them that make for the best season for hiking…and the landscape has oh-so-subtly begun to remind of of the golden hues of autumn ahead…

We have very limited weekend availability at the inn through the rest of the year, and weekday stays are filling up as well! Join us for an overnight staycation, last minute family gathering, a foliage and apple picking/fall festival-hopping adventure, or just a sweet escape to experience the best time of the year in Vermont! Our weekly live music series continues each Wednesday until October 7th. The restaurant will be back open for select Saturdays in October and November before we switch to our (very exciting 👀) new winter hours- more on that next month!
See you soon! 🌾

Join us in September for two special tastings in the parlor! If you’ve had the pleasure of dining with us at The Tillerman, you’ve probably noticed our maitre d’; a tall man named Will. You may have been warmly welcomed by him, or served a fine bottle of wine whilst being told a story of the wine’s provenance. We will gather around the farm table in the parlor to explore different flavors and regions of each wine and cheese in these two workshops. Join us for one or both!

In the first, we will explore six chillable reds. Tasting chillable reds will help people understand the overall way that temperature affects the taste of wine. Knowing that a simpler red can be more delicious if not too warm is a fundamental bit of knowledge, especially when choosing less expensive wines. There will be grazing boards accross the long farm table to enjoy.

The second is a Cheese Tasting to celebrate Vermont Cheese Council Vermont Cheese Week! We will taste 6 Vermont made cheeses paired with different Vermont made beverages, and explore the nuances of simple yet memorable food and drink accompaniments. You will come away with a better understanding of the subtle art behind building a beautifully balanced cheese board and drink pairing for your next gathering.

Attendees will receive 10% off their meal at the restaurant following the workshop. Please make a separate dinner reservation if you’d like to join us afterwards!

This weekend marks our 13th wedding of the season! Seeing each couple bring the property to life in their own unique way is always a joy. We like to say that having a wedding here is like attending a party at a friend’s house who also happens to be the best cook and host you know…whether it’s a micro wedding with 10 guests, or an 150 person shindig with all the bells and whistles.

If you’re a couple interested in having a wedding with us in 2027, dates are starting to fill in! Visit the link in our bio to submit an inquiry and/or book a private tour (while the property is looking its finest!!).

We’ll see you tomorrow for our weekly Wednesday night summer live music series! It’s been a lovely past few weeks having you all join us, so thanks to all who have come out!

Begstealorborrow_vt will be holding it down with tunes from 6-8pm.

We will be serving up drinks, sweets, snacks and (new!) Picnic Bags: a selection of picnic provisions to feed 2-4 with meat, fish, or vegetarian options.

las hermosas will be all set up, cooking up some of the best tacos in Vermont- and now with a second ordering station at their trailer to keep lines down!

Mark from Mark Adams will be here with chair massage for a moment of peace in the horseshoe garden!

Our featured non-profit will be Food 4 Farmers, a Vermont-based organization that helps develop community-led strategies that address the root causes of food insecurity for coffee-farming families by providing the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to ensure that coffee farmers can feed their families all year long.

The event will be from 5-8pm with music kicking off at 6pm. Please carpool, as parking is limited! Visit the link in our bio to learn more or see the lineup for the remainder of the summer!

See you there!

Understory Farm flowers filled the barn yesterday evening for a flower arranging workshop led by Kelsey of Kelsey | Vermont Grown Sustainable Florist. Midsummer always seems to arrive like a flash, thus gathering with a group of fellow flower-admirers to celebrate the bounty of all these blooms (just tiny seeds not long ago…and grown only 20 miles southwest of here) felt like hitting pause on one of the most special times of the year.

The beauty of these workshops is not only learning about the art of arranging and growing cut flowers…but it’s also about slowing down with the natural world around us- creating this snapshot of time in the form of a magnificent handful of flowers before you. Kelsey and Gregory will be back in the fall and winter for two more workshops in this 4-part series that began in early spring. Hope to see you there!
