A little behind the scenes from yesterday’s salon branding shoot.

Branding sessions are always so much fun because we get to do way more than just headshots — working shots, team photos, details, personality, and all the little things that actually show what your business feels like.

Salon branding sessions are some of my favorite shoots, and this one was extra fun because I got to bring in all of my setups and completely turn the salon into a studio for the day. I loved getting to use all of my hand-painted backdrops and create so many different looks right inside their space.

WHAT MAKES MY MINI SESSIONS A LITTLE DIFFERENT?

Mini session season is quickly approaching, and if you’re new to here, I figured this was probably a good time to explain exactly what booking one with me looks like.

I’ll help you with outfits, colors and what will photograph best at the location we’re using. Send me what you’re considering and I’ll help you pull everything together.

And once you get there, you do NOT have to know what to do.

I will direct you the entire time.

I’ll tell you where to stand, where to put your hands, when to lean in, when to straighten up, when to push a shoulder forward and all those tiny little things that make a huge difference in a photograph.

And yes, I’m absolutely watching your hair too. If something is out of place, I’m fixing it.

But I also don’t want an entire gallery of stiff poses and forced smiles.

I’ll give you prompts, little games and things to do together that get everyone moving, laughing and interacting naturally while I’m still making sure I’m getting all the good angles.

My mini sessions are also never based around one restricted setup.

We walk around, explore, use different areas of the location and create as much variety as we possibly can in the time we have.

I’ve also started sending out even more tips before sessions to help you get into the right mindset ahead of time — including little prompts, posing ideas and even encouraging you to think about the things your kids are obsessed with right now.

Because I don’t just want you to remember what your family looked like.

I want you to look back at these pictures 10 years from now and remember this exact phase.

The way your toddler held your hand.
The silly thing that always made them laugh.
The way your kids climbed all over you.
The little personalities they had at this exact age.

And then there’s the number of pictures you receive…

I’m honestly a little embarrassed to advertise just how many but using the word “mini” to describe anything about what you get feels like a joke.

Let’s just say you’re going to have A LOT of choices.

Different poses.
Candid moments.
Smiling-at-the-camera pictures.
Mom with the kids.
Dad with the kids.
Kids together.
Individual kids.
Couple pictures.
Walking.
Playing.
Snuggling.
And pretty much anything else I can squeeze in.

Hard to believe, but this will be my 17th year offering mini sessions.

And some of the families I photograph have been coming back almost every single year.

I’ve watched babies turn into toddlers, toddlers become big kids and families grow right in front of my camera, and that is still one of my favorite parts of this job.

PHOTOGRAPHERS — this one is for YOU.

I’ve been talking about putting together a Branding + Headshot event for photographers for a while, and it is officially happening!

And I only have TWO spots still open!

If you’re anything like me, you are ALWAYS behind the camera and somehow your own headshots are years old, your profile picture desperately needs updating, and you’re constantly telling yourself you need more content for your own business.
So I wanted to create something that gives us ALL of it in one evening.

We’ll have multiple styled setups, hand-painted backdrops, a florist will be creating custom floral installations, props geared towards photographers.
You will leave with updated headshots + branding images, working/content shots, outfit changes and plenty of opportunities to create reels and BTS.

I’ll personally be rotating through and photographing everyone throughout the event — AND you’ll be surrounded by other photographers, so bring your camera and memory cards and take advantage of it!

Want a reel? Grab a stand and record.

And for my wedding photographers, we’ll also have a bride modeling, so you can grab some “working with a bride” content, BTS and even shoot a few images for your portfolio while you’re there.

Before the event, I’ll also be sending everyone a branding questionnaire + content guide with ideas to help you plan what to bring, what shots you actually need and how to make the most of your time in the studio.

And I don’t just want you leaving with a folder full of pretty pictures you never post. I’ll also be including ideas for how to actually USE the content we create — posts, stories, booking announcements, website updates, reels and more.

The whole point is to leave with as much usable content as possible while getting to hang out, network and meet other photographers in the process.

And because this is the very first one, I’m keeping it intentionally small and affordable while I test out this whole concept and see just how much we can create in one evening.

One wedding-day decision I will almost always recommend?

A FIRST LOOK.

I know some couples absolutely love the tradition of waiting until the aisle — and if that’s important to you, I will never try to talk you out of it.

But after photographing almost 300 weddings , there are so many reasons I love a first look.

It gives you a few quiet minutes together before everything really begins.

You actually get to TALK, hug, laugh, cry and take in the fact that you’re about to get married instead of seeing each other for the first time with 100+ people watching.

And from a photography standpoint, it can completely change the flow of your wedding day.

We can usually photograph the two of you, wedding party and a large portion of family portraits BEFORE the ceremony.

Which means after you say “I do,” you can spend a whole lot more time actually enjoying the party you spent months planning.

And no — I don’t think it ruins the aisle moment.

I’ve photographed plenty of couples who did a first look and STILL completely lost it when they saw each other coming down the aisle.

Two totally different moments. Both incredibly special.
