Interested in the pinjack but cannot afford it? Pinside seems to have you handy folks covered.
TLDR: Pinjack is the higher quality and better experience option. But if you have the tools the home modded version discussed in this pinside thread is very capable.
Following this pinside thread: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/pinjack-has-anyone-used-one- -7856046
Review compared to the Pinjack: The pinjack is wider, can accommodate more angles, and seems to have a slightly easier to pull "Trigger" for both raising and lowing. I do wish the pinjack had the slow release option because it can thud down at times.
The Modified versions have shorter legs and so you have to pretty much be flush with the leg to get them to lift (Less accommodating for odd angles), and generally feel a bit less stable wirh a narrower base, and have a harder to pull trigger. I love the slow release.
What should you buy?
If you don't already have the tools, or know someone who does then buy the pinjack. It's a well polished device that works super well and to buy one would cost less than the tools to mod the others which imo are a lesser experience.
If you already have the tools it's hard to say no to the modded amazon lifters. It's an easy under an hour project where you get one for yourself and one for your buddy for half the cost. The shortcomings of the modded version aren't worth spending the extra money on the pinjack if you already have the tools imo.
I do love the Slow release feature.
It took me about 30 min to modify the two I got from amazon with the slow release feature.
I used a diamond bladed wet bandsaw for cutting and a grinder for finishing.
