I don’t normally get this picture as photographers usually take off early into the dance set. However, stayed till the end.

Open scene:
Last song ends, and I close out with some BS on the mic. The guests start clapping and I decide to throw up prayer hands like some sort of celebrity on the Jumbotron at a sporting event.
End scene.

Fail, but also blessed 🙏🏼

You’ll never know every song. Being a DJ exposes me to music I might not otherwise encounter. For example, Joclyn provided some Vietnamese songs that we played at her wedding.

When I played this track, Ed and I looked at eachother and said this song slaps. 🇻🇳

Mic stuff - arguably just as important as the music. I am going to give some more unsolicited advice, again. I wouldn’t book a DJ blindly. I do not mean without seeing them, rather, without hearing them. Crowd control is important at weddings and I think you should like what your DJ sounds like from a tone perspective. What if you found out they sound like Pee-wee Herman? It’s cool if that is your thing, but it’s a detail you might want to know in advance of the big day. Have a Zoom meeting and take note of how they relay information to you. Is it clear or confusing? This might be a great way to gauge how they’ll speak to your guests. In guiding guests you must be clear, concise and cut out the fluff in my opinion. Finally, analyze how they speak overall, does it come off too lax, is it too proper, Whichever flavor you prefer, you’ll hear in the Zoom and be able to determine if that is for you.

On this topic I am going to close out with a story. Most mic work isn’t challenging, however there was a time I was faced with something that was. I was asked to do a dedication song set for a sibling of the groom who had recently passed away. What made this difficult is trying to announce and introduce this but with the right balance of respect to the family but also the groom wanted to make this a moment for family and friends to dance together to some songs of their favorite artists. I honestly can’t remember a time my heart rate elevated before speaking aside from this. I was so nervous because I wanted to make this right. I thought alot about what to say and how to say it and iterated in my head until something came out that I thought was appropriate for the moment. It worked and helped cultivate the moment the groom was looking for.  Phew.

Why am I suspended over a 20 foot drop on 2 of those platforms that guys who install drywall use? In short, because I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is no secret, every DJ wants to be set up directly next to the dance floor. I have written posts on this in the past and I think every DJ would agree, it’s more of a necessity rather than a preference. However, what do we do when its impossible to get on the dance floor?

Grana in the Langham is a restaurant, honesty one of the best breakfasts in Boston. In this unique space, You’re also able to host a smaller (80ish guest count) wedding. The room however has curved dining booths, half walls, and bars that are all fixed, making the “where do we put the DJ?” question, questionable. If you look up there is a loft, which is the DJ location, away from the dance floor but the only place I was going to fit. So rather than complain, I embraced this and started coming up with some ideas on how I can make this work for me. As many of you know by now, I am not one to take the easy road out. While others might see these challenges as a burden, I like to see them as an opportunity. An opportunity to create something special and different.

I went to Grana a few weeks before the wedding with a tape measure and started to brainstorm ideas on what to do. There is no elevator access to the loft, and the stairwell is tight. However, the smallest option of my DJ booths would just fit around the bend in the stairwell. Next, I decided to place the speakers on the floor rather than in the loft, which poses a question of cable lengths and power.  Figured that out. Finally I measured the concealed height of the concrete railing to be 18”. I drove to Home Depot and bought two platforms to elevate myself and the DJ booth such that from the guest view we almost appeared floating.

Anyway, did I have to do this? No. Was it requested by the couple? No. I just only want to do something if I am happy with the outcome, with my twist on it. If not, I’d just rather not do it at all.

Bonus, I painted a ceiling in my basement the other day and used the platform.

I need the proper boom boom for each room. I like having multiple systems in order to scale sound and accommodate different sized rooms. Bigger isn’t always better (thats what sh....forget it).

If you bring an underpowered system in a room like this it’s going to sound bad, and I cannot be convinced otherwise. Typically you peak early, mics sound like garbage and it is a position I never want to be in. Conversely, I wouldn’t bring this system to a smaller, more intimate space. While technically it can be used, it might not physically fit in the space given and not look proportional to the surroundings. A hard no for me 🐶

If you decide to hire me for your wedding, I don’t just send over a contract and say, “ok welp, see you there!” It’s far more in depth than that, there are a handful of virtual meetings, as well as a final in my office where we sit and discuss every detail possible, in person.

WIth that, I am able to learn so much about you beyond just your taste in music. In the planning process for B&K, I learned he owned a mobile detailing business. Now some of you know that I am a car enthusiast so naturally I had to support this. I actually enjoy detailing my own cars but with how chaotic my schedule is, I do not have the time.

I messaged Brendan to come out and take care of the grubbiest vehicle of them all, the Van. He comes to your home, brings everything needed to detail your cars while you sit inside your house or office slamming on the keyboard on Microsoft Excel. He even uses his own water tanks so you don’t even need to provide water, it’s crazy. Will be coming back to do the rest of the fleet. A+ ( )

Let’s talk about fusion. Over the past few years live music/ DJ collabs have become more and more common at weddings. Some people like the versatility of a DJ set,  but want to incorporate the theatrics of a live music component in some way. Hence, we land on fusion.

In the US of A you normally see a sax, violin or a drummer. However, once you branch out into ethnic weddings the instruments change with the culture. For example the Bouzouki, or how my friends like to call it the “Greek Banjo”. This was my first time collabing with a bouzouki in this way. Normally, the guys who play it are geriatric and are suffering from emphysema from lifelong cigarette abuse. Until now, meet Tommy.

Tommy is a performer through and through. When Liz & Nick said they were bringing Tommy in from Sydney Australia to come jam with me at their wedding I was very pumped. Finally, a bouzouki collab that I could vibe with.

We jammed, and by the smiles on our faces, we want it again. It’s worth the 10,097 miles to bring this Kangaroo back to Boston.

Let’s talk AI ~ Not a fan. While I’m sure there are many cases where it’s used for good, I feel as if it’s being abused more than anything. Knowledge is faked and I’m not down with that.

Everything you see here is real. The captions, the ideas , even the jump. What you see is what you get.

Now as we take the steps into next year….. kidding, I hate those heartfelt lengthy reflection posts.

The year was great. My couples are cool, and I’m in a constant state of trying to one-up myself. That combination has proven to be lethal. My 2026 people, you’re up. Thats it
