ATTENTION BORING RUNNERS - RACE CANCELED
It is with a heavy heart that we must cancel the 2022 Boring Marathon, Half Marathon, and 8k Races that were scheduled to take place tomorrow, Sunday, September 11th.
Here is what the Boring Marathon Board of Directors is proposing at this time:
Race Deferment
We will offer a deferment to the 2023 event to anyone wishing to defer their entry to next year. This will lock in your entry for 2023 at 2022 prices as there is projected to be a significant increase for entry fees for next year due to rising costs of putting on the race.
Virtual Race
Anyone wishing to move their 2022 entry to a virtual race can also choose that option. We will extend the virtual window from 2 weeks to 3 weeks, so you can run the race (on our course, as it is all well marked, or your own course) any time between September 11th and October 2nd.
We want you to get your shirt, bib, and medal even though you may not choose the virtual option!
- We will also hold packet pick-up tomorrow, September 11th, from 7:00 am - 10:00 am
- If you cannot attend packet pick-up today or tomorrow, and would like your shirt, medal, and bib mailed to you, we can do that as well.
We know how hard you’ve been training and what a loss this is at the last minute. We have runners that have traveled some distance to come to our race, including international travelers and those from the other side of the United States, still others who will travel today, or get up very early to come to Boring tomorrow. We also have aid station groups who are depending on the event to help them with their fundraising efforts.
When making this decision, the safety of the runners and volunteers is our most important factor. The City of Gresham, Clackamas County, PGE, and other agencies we have been working with also want a safe and fun event. So when looking at the safety aspect at the top of the priority list, now knowing what the wind will do between now and tomorrow morning, the fear is that as the wind speeds go down but also shift directions, it would cause our air quality to be even worse than it is now. We also have no guarantee from PGE that they will reopen the portions of the course that are now closed before the marathon is supposed to start at 6:30 am.
Thank you for your continued support, patience and understanding as we work through these difficult times. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by the ongoing wildfires fires and for the safety of those who are fighting them.
Please email [email protected] with any questions you may have, as well as your decision with what you would like to do with your race entry if you are unable to attend either of the packet pickup times above.
Sincerely,
Scott Jones
