Tell us about your auction background, what you specialize in, and generally about your career.
I sell personal property, business assets, city & county government surplus and also conduct benefit/charity auctions. Started in 1989 with my first TAA Convention in Burleson, Texas. I've been a TAA member for 36 years, served on the board of directors and was 2nd VP. I was the 2013 TAA Hall of Fame honoree. I have taught seminars on fundraising and sound for the auctioneer, both for TAA and NAA.
Do you have any designations you want us to share?
Currently PRI, however in the past, I had completed and earned the CAI, BAS and ATS.
Have you won any contests or have any titles you would like us to share?
Yes, 1994 West Texas Regional Champion Auctioneer, 2017 TAA Senior Champion and several years of 2nd and 1st runner up in State Championship.
Tell us about the first auction you ever attended.
It was used hotel furniture, still my most difficult auction I've done to this day! LOL
What and/or who made you want to be in the auction industry?
I grew up in the antique business, then one day I decided I wanted to be an auctioneer.
How long have you been in the auction industry?
36 years (1989)
What's one auction you'll never forget and why?
Oh there are so many to list at this time, I could try and narrow it down to one or two later.
What's the most unusual item you've ever sold?
Box of ladies panties for the US Customs office in Laredo, Texas
What types of auctions do you conduct or support?
Currently, city/county government and benefit auctions. Just completed our last estate auction as I am retiring from that side of the business this year.
Who mentored you or had the biggest influence on your career?
Dudley Althaus was my mentor and Del Lemons.
What advice would you give to someone starting in the auction business?
Be honest and sincere with your sellers and buyers. Don't hide anything and always be up front, good or bad, just tell the truth. Have morals and integrity, the rest will fall into place.
