Growing up, my Grandma Gail taught me the power of authenticity and acce

Bridal Week Hotel #3: Martinique New York on Broadway

The third courtesy block was held at one of my favorite boutique-style options for events like this.

The Martinique New York on Broadway, Curio Collection by Hilton, offered something a little different.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲:
• Boutique feel with personality and style
• A great option for smaller teams looking for something less traditional
• Central location with character that fits the creative energy of Bridal Week

This hotel rounded out the strategy perfectly. Three very different properties. Three distinct experiences. One smart approach that protected the client while giving designers a real choice.

This is why I rarely recommend a one-size-fits-all solution during citywide events. When you understand what your attendees actually need, you can build something better than "here's your hotel."

Event planning is basically improv.

8pm the night before our annual conference. Phone rings.

"Our keynote's father just passed. She can't make it."

My client's face went white. 1100 people arriving at 8:30am. No keynote.

I said the only thing that mattered: "Yes, and..."

Yes, our keynote can't be here. And we're creating something to replace it — a panel of your own experts who've been sitting in the audience this whole time.

Yes, the panel isn't aware of this yet. And we're doing it as "Ask the CEO" instead — raw, real, unscripted.

Yes, this wasn't the plan. And it became the highest-rated session we've ever done.

The CEO crushed it. The audience loved the authenticity. Three subject matter experts became company heroes that day.

Behind the scenes: chaos.
On stage: calm.

After 30+ years, I've learned the events people talk about aren't the perfect ones.

They're the ones where we all held our breath and made it work anyway.

That's not chaos. That's the job.

Bridal Week Hote #2: Hilton Garden Inn Times Square South

Not every designer wants the same hotel. And that's exactly why this strategy worked.

Another courtesy block we held was at the Hilton Garden Inn New York Times Square South.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲:
• A more modern, streamlined option for smaller teams
• Excellent value during a peak citywide week
• Walkable to key areas while staying slightly removed from the chaos

Sometimes designers don't need all the bells and whistles. They need a clean room, a good location, and a rate that doesn't eat into their budget. This property checked all those boxes.

And just as important, the block structure protected my client from attrition exposure while still supporting their designers.

Choice without risk. That's the goal.

I hear this from event planners all the time.

Me: "I help planners find venues."
Them: "That's literally my job."

Then I explain how it actually works…
And 💡 — the lightbulb goes on.

"Wait… you do the research, negotiations, and site visits… I make the final decision… and it costs my company NOTHING?"

Yes. Exactly.

Because every hour spent comparing room blocks is an hour not spent on strategy, creativity, and guest experience.

A beautiful hotel can still be the wrong event decision.

Pretty does not always mean practical.

I’ve seen hotels with gorgeous photos, stunning meeting space, and all the right buzzwords on paper.

Then you get onsite and realize:

the breakout rooms are on a different floor
the flow feels awkward
the signage will be harder than expected
the space creates friction instead of ease
and your attendees are going to feel it all day

That’s why I never look at a hotel as just a hotel.

I look at how the event will actually move.

Because the right fit is not about what looks good in the proposal.
It’s about what works once people arrive.

Your guests feel that.
Your team feels that.
And you definitely feel that once the agenda starts moving.

A beautiful hotel is nice.
A hotel that works is better.

That’s why I never skip the site visit — and I never just look at the ballroom.

Bridal Week Hotel #1: The New Yorker

For New York Bridal Fashion Week, flexibility mattered just as much as location.

One of the courtesy blocks we secured was at The New Yorker Hotel.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀:
• Spacious rooms and a large footprint, ideal for teams, garment racks, and fittings
• Easy access to transit for moving around the city quickly
• A classic New York hotel that handles high-volume weeks with confidence

There's something about The New Yorker that just feels like the city. It's iconic without being fussy, and it delivers when it counts.

Behind the scenes, this block gave designers a solid, reliable option during one of the busiest weeks in the city, without putting my client at risk for unused rooms.

This is what smart sourcing looks like during citywide events. Options, protection, and flexibility built in from the start.

𝗜 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲:
✔ Is there an actual desk… or just "decorative furniture"?
✔ Enough outlets — and are they anywhere near human reach?
✔ Lighting that works for Zoom calls 𝘢𝘯𝘥 real life

𝗜 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀:
• Can luggage fit 𝘢𝘯𝘥 still walk around?
• Is the Wi-Fi strong enough in my room or do I have to go to the lobby?
• Does the thermostat actually listen when you touch it?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴:
• Counter space (or none)
• Lighting that won't traumatize you at 6am
• Shower pressure — because tired people need wins

𝗔𝘁 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗜'𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴:
• Soundproofing (can I hear the elevator? the ice machine?)
• Blackout curtains that actually black out
• Can a guest recover here… or just survive?

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁:
• Coffee maker location (spill risk = high)
• Iron + board placement (wrinkle triage matters)
• Is there space to prep tomorrow 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 sitting on the bed?

I once wrote a TripAdvisor review that mentioned outlet placement. My husband asked if I was okay.

Hotel rooms aren't just places to sleep.
They're recovery zones, prep rooms, and sanity savers during events.

The difference between "fine" and "fantastic" lives in these details.

Once you've planned events, you can't unsee it.
You just quietly rate the room and move on 😉 💛

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see.

A client gets excited about the lowest room rate on the shortlist.

I get it.
It feels like the obvious win.

But room rate is only one line on the page.

What about:
meeting room rental
F&B minimums
resort fees
internet
parking
attrition
upgrades
VIP amenities
contract flexibility

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹.

And sometimes the hotel with the slightly higher rate ends up being the smarter decision because the full package is stronger.

Recently, a client chose a hotel with a room rate $20 higher. But they received complimentary meeting Wi-Fi, free water stations throughout the event space, and the CVB added a $5-per-room-per-night rebate.

The "more expensive" hotel ended up being the better deal.

𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘀.
𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲.

That's why I never compare hotels by rate alone.

𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Because the smartest hotel choice is not always the cheapest one.
It's the one that works best for the full experience.
