Today was the first Growers Market of 2026. It also marks 8 months to the day since John died. It is a day I have both been looking forward to and dreading.

Another "first" is in the books. The first market since he passed. Inevitably, there were condolences, as well as those who had not yet heard, who asked about him. And, of course, tears.

But it's done. I made it. And, all in all, it was a good day.

I bought myself an early birthday present! (My birthday's in August, lol.)

Jesse and I are working hard, continuing to redo most of the areas around the house. This is in the back yard. I love water features, so this is my present to me!

I promise not to post every one of my dahlias as they bloom, but wanted to share blooms #2 and #3 (Still in MAY!)... Hapet Granat (new this year), plus a seedling. I ordinarily don't tend toward the single types, but I do love the colors in this one!

...AND (drumroll, please) the first dahlia bloom of 2026 award goes to:

Small World!

I'd have to look it up to be sure, but I believe this is the earliest dahlia bloom I have had (that was not grown in the grow tent). I love to experiment, so I started this + around 50 or so others, inside in February & moved them outside (in a protected area) in March. Several of the others are close to blooming as well so, if you're local, I should have dahlias at the for this year's first regular season market June 6!! ❤️

...And here we have "Plan B":

Since neither Jesse nor I have much experience in building things, the birds' outdoor area build is making good, but S-L-O-W progress. At our speed, and since progress today was especially lagging, it looks like we still have (at least) several more days before it will be finished. And the brooder is just too small for everybody, especially with how big the ducks are.

SO, the chicks now have the brooder all to themselves and the ducks' new temporary home is my shower, blocked off with puppy gates! 🤣 The shower extends around the corner so there's plenty of room and their water pan overflow can go right down the drain instead of constantly soaking everything. Genius! I can't take credit, I saw it on my duck group! 😁

I HOPE we can get their area done soon so we can get on to other things. There's always a ton to do on the flower farm this time of year + the starts in just over two weeks. Eek! 😳

I have two problems. (Well, more than two, but we'll focus on these for now. 😂)

1. I have a lot of leftover treats from Beauty and the Bees shop's Mother's Day sale yesterday.

2. I'm not getting as many people as I would like, to visit our lovely on-farm store. (Hence problem #1).

SO... To help with both problems, I'm going to open up the store today from Noon to 4pm ONLY, AND!!! THE HOMEMADE TREATS ARE FREE!!! Yes, even the Dubai chocolate! Although I will divide and repackage the large bars so that more people can have them.

BRRR!

Over an hour of covering last night paid off, though (swipe to second photo). Except for a few that got leaned over by the covers, everything looks great! INCLUDING these almost-blooming lilies & (big!) early start dahlias! ❤️
