Black lives matter. George Floyd and countless others deserved better. There is no “normal” to get back to.
As others have said, take time to familiarize yourself with the legacy of black thought, and not just limited to pleasing forms of art and music. Challenge your perspective (and your attention span). Privilege is by nature difficult to self-diagnose. We must lean-in to new ways of seeing, and seek LASTING change to our own behavior.
Civic participation is itself a sign of progress, and there will always be room for more black innovation and leadership—as well as ownership—in our communities.
Step Pepper has been on hiatus. Recent events have emphasized more than ever the need to align our vision with our beliefs. We have currently replaced our website with a curated list of resources for furthering education about racial injustice and the mechanisms of social change. Also included is a number of reputable funds for those simply wishing to give. Link in bio or visit steppepper.com/blm
We have also posted resources related to helping those combating the ongoing threat of Covid-19. If you attend a protest, wear a mask and observe social distancing. Visit steppepper.com/covid-19 to learn ways you can help.
Today is Breonna Taylor’s birthday—she would have been 27. Also today, Bandcamp is waiving its fees to support the global music community. It is always within your power to vote with your wallet—supporting your local economy by supporting black businesses. But if you must buy digital music at this time, know that 100% percent of our sales will go to select charities through the month of June.
