Some of our favorite moments from the Congdon wedding, captured by April Bagley Photography. Romantic and eye-catching, with pops of pink placed just right. It was a day full of beauty and thoughtful detail. We can't wait to share more from the full gallery soon.

A special shoutout to our team member Dallas, our Q2 photo contest winner. We asked our staff to capture moments from recent events—since they’re often tucked into behind-the-scenes vantage points ensuring the day runs smoothly. Dallas captured this beautiful shot from the courtyard balcony during the Blackmon wedding, and we’re proud to celebrate her eye for a moment well worth remembering.

Sound should not be a distraction. It should blend into the background, supporting the experience without ever taking center stage. At Gabrella Manor, we work to make sure it all feels seamless.

Congratulations to the Adams!
It was a true pleasure to be part of their day—gracious, thoughtful, and an absolute joy to work with from start to finish. Steve Johnson Fine Art captured the spirit of the celebration beautifully, from the bride’s elegant look to the joy shared throughout the event and across the day.

Gabrella Manor was originally named the Bundy House after it was commissioned by its first owner, Theodore C. Bundy, in 1938. Bundy was well respected among the community and was well known for entertaining dignitaries and guests. Mrs. Bundy and their daughter, Barbara, lived in the house for years after Mr. Bundy passed away until it was sold to Brenda Jones and Steve Johnson in 1997.
Brenda was working for Bell South as a geographic information system consultant and had been dating Steve for several years. Steve was a videographer and photographer and typically spent his weekends at various wedding venues. Brenda started going with Steve on his jobs so that they could spend time together even while having such busy schedules.
Brenda decided that she wanted to begin writing a business plan and decided to use a wedding venue as her “template” to learn the process. She was working with a small business group at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and they were all in unanimous agreement that her business plan was wonderful. They all said that this business plan would be much more viable than a consulting firm, so Brenda got to work.
The business plan was finalized in January of 1997, which happened to be perfect timing since her brother had just retired from the phone company and earned his real estate license. Brenda’s mother, Ruth, had suggested that they look at the Bundy House, which was right up the road from where they lived for many years.
Brenda’s original plan was to find an abandoned church and create an indoor garden, but when they knocked on the Bundy House doors for the very first time, they fell in love. Brenda and Steve wanted something beautiful but not dainty. The location was easily accessible, on-site parking was available, and there were several large rooms. However, there was a lot of work to be done.
Steve and Brenda purchased the manor on August 2, 1997. They had contractors lined up to begin work on the property. They added air conditioning; a parking lot; did electrical repairs; added restrooms; built the catering building, ballroom, and apartment (for Steve and Brenda to live in); added privacy fencing around the back of the property; added the pavilion; and filled in the swimming pool to create the wedding arbor.
At the time, there were only three other wedding venues in the Birmingham Area. They were doing things out of their homes, or properties they owned, but Brenda wanted to do things differently. She and Steve decided they wanted to become a fully licensed event venue, and so they did. They were able to create a new type of wedding venue for the Birmingham Area, while also raising the standard.
The house was renamed in honor of Brenda’s grandmother. The grandmother that she had called “nan” all her life was not her biological grandmother. Her biological grandmother, Gabrella, had lost her life in childbirth many years before Brenda was born. When Brenda learned about this, she realized she had to name the property as an homage to her lost loved one.
Brenda and Steve were the first to be married at Gabrella Manor in December of 1997 and enjoy sharing this beautiful piece of history with clients and guests. From 1997 to 2018, there were 1,562 events and 192,709 guests that had attended the venue. Brenda Jones and Steve Johnson restored the Bundy House to one of Birmingham’s most beloved wedding and event venues – Gabrella Manor.
