The Monday Mansion Tour!
Most visitors walk right over these 127-year-old masterpieces without ever noticing them.
These original cast-metal floor grates have been part of Kilmer Mansion since it was built in 1898. While they served an important purpose as part of the home’s heating and ventilation system, they were also designed to be beautiful.
During the Gilded Age, craftsmanship wasn’t reserved for grand staircases and chandeliers. Even practical features like floor vents were carefully crafted with intricate patterns and decorative details that reflected the elegance of the home.
More than a century later, these grates remain exactly where they were intended to be, quietly doing their job while preserving a small piece of the mansion’s original character.
Take a closer look the next time you visit. You never know what details you might discover beneath your feet.
