Why Valet Parking Increases Restaurant Revenue
They have become a common sight in most large city’s, valets waiting outside restaurants ready to relieve you of your car, and that annoying problem of finding a parking space. There is a reason for this, not only does it attract more customers, valet parking increases restaurant revenue in several ways.

As more and more restaurants continue to open in busy city centers and downtown areas parking is getting harder and harder to come by in many metropolises and small towns alike. Many restaurant owners overlook figuring out a parking solution when providing sufficient parking, especially during the peak seasons may be their key to success. This is why a growing number of restaurants, bars and retail stores are now offering guests valet parking.

Why Its Time to Valet

When you’re applying for a permit with the city but can’t afford (or find) a nearby lot to purchase or rent, you may feel dead on arrival. Thriving cities are simply running out of parking spots and developments where parking is feasible. Even if you’re planning on providing parking spots the block surrounding your restaurant may already be full.

One way to circumvent this issue is to purchase a valet podium and start your own valet service or hire a valet company to handle it for you. It’s an investment, but the promise of carefree parking will bring in enough additional business to pay off the investment in full. In fact, if you add your own valet service it actually creates an additional source of revenue.

[This guide was put together by valet parking expert/Jalopnik commentator M0L0TOV for your edification - ed. note] Once again, the holidays are upon us, parties, shopping, and other social events loom overhead. Some of us that are impatient or don't have the time will see the signs for "valet" and cough up the money to save us parking stress. However, if proper steps aren't taken, the convenience can be more of a headache than its worth.

For over a year and a half, I was in charge of the claims department at a valet company. I was in charge of handling claims in over 13 different states. If your car was damaged, stolen, or if items were taken from your car, you either spoke or yelled at me. I believe the best way to avoid any of these tenuous situations is prevention. But if the worst does happen, there are some tips included for how to deal with an incident.

1. Please be sure that you are handing the keys to the valet.

Please don't give us the chauffer/FOB keys, or else it will be hard to start the car later. Most valets uniforms are as follows: khaki shorts or pants, a polo t-shirt with the company logo, and finally white sneakers. Valets are required to wear uniforms of this sort and if you are doubtful, look for other valets dressed in the same or similar uniforms to confirm the person you are speaking to is a genuine valet.

2. Visually inpsect your vehicle before handing the keys to the valet.

Those 30 seconds you spend inspecting your vehicle may save you the headache of noticing a scratch that had previously been there.

3. Remove any portable electronics of value from the car.

Ipods, GPS recievers, and radar detectors are popular targets, take the item with you. Expensive sunglasses are also a prime target of theft. No one cares about your change. You can lock the items in your glovebox but if the valet has the keys or left the vehicle unlocked, it's pointless to leave the items in there. Thieves primarily go after small expensive items that can be stored in their pockets.

4. If you must leave expensive items in your trunk(i.e. laptop or Christmas presents), COVER THEM UP!

Theft from cars is a crime of opportunity, if they don't see or notice it, they won't steal it.

5. Never mention any expensive items in your car (i.e. I just got a new GPS for my car) because you're practically begging to having your items stolen.

6. If your car has weird quirks, (i.e. door has to be opened a certain way or the window can't be rolled down) please tell the valet ahead of time, it'll save you a headache.

At the end of the night, please be sure to visually inspect the car and check your vehicle for valuable items before leaving the property. If you fail to notice damage to your vehicle until you get home or the next day, the valet company will simply say all claims must be made before leaving property, you will be S.O.L.

The reason is because it's difficult to pin the damage on the valet company when the damage could have been caused by another party after leaving the property. Always keep all the tickets given to you by the valet company just in case there is an issue.

Hate giving your keys to a parking valet? Move to France.

That’s where a new robotic parking system is being tested. Its name is Stan.

(Stanley Robotics)

That’s short for Stanley Robotics, the Parisian startup that developed the technology and installed it at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport for its first public trial.

Here’s how it works:

First you pull your car into a drop-off area, enter your payment and return flight information into a kiosk, and lock the vehicle.

Then, a wheeled electric robot -- basically an oversized pallet jack – rolls around and literally picks up your car by the all four tires with the type of cradles a modern tow truck uses.

After that, it simply wheels it away to an open space, gently places it down, and comes back for another.

Since doors don’t need to be open for a driver, the cars can be parked more closely together, which increases a lot or garage’s capacity by up to 50 percent.

One robot can manage up to 400 vehicles at a time, and will shuffle them into the most efficient positions based on the return times of their owners.

Possibly the best part is that you don’t even have to give Stan your keys.

Another part of the company’s pitch is that along with replacing humans, all of the stuff they need (lights, elevators, signage, etc.) can also be eliminated from a facility, saving additional money for its operator.

Here’s a mind-boggler for you: one day Stan may park a fully-autonomous car.

But will it have to tip?

A man in California is among the first to catch a valet behaving badly in his 2015 Corvette using a controversial built-in recording feature.

Dan Cowles told KTLA 5 when he bought his dream car, a 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, he opted for the Performance Data Recorder. The Corvette PDR uses a high-definition camera mounted in the windshield header, a microphone in the cabin and a GPS receiver that record and track the sports car's movements and sounds. They work together to produce a video with telemetry overlay, so you can see acceleration rates, lap times and g-forces. The system can be customized to show extensive performance data, or simply video of your drive like a traditional dash cam. It also comes with Valet Mode, which locks the glove box, disables entertainment and records video. The audio recording feature ran afoul of several state's recording consent laws, but this video has no audio, indicating the fix may have been as easy as turning off the microphone.

Cowles dropped off his hot red 'Vette with the valets at the Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts in Costa Mesa, CA. When he got his car back he checked the PDR and discovered footage of the valet taking a short, but intense, joyride in the garage.

In the video, the valet finds a straightaway in a tiered parking garage and pushes the car to 50 miles per hour in five seconds before quickly stopping. He then parks the car without incident. The valet then gets out of the car and takes one more admiring look at the front.

The valet company has yet to commented on the video, according to Fox News, but valets everywhere should be on notice; that little red Corvette you have your eye on may have its eyes on you.
