💍 YOUR FRIEND IS YOUR OFFICIANT… UNTIL THEY’RE NOT. 😳
I recently saw this post in a wedding planning group:
“Our wedding is this coming November… our officiant, who we know personally, just emailed to say she has to back out because she and her spouse are going on vacation. I’m utterly disappointed.”
My heart sank for this couple.
I get it—weddings are expensive, and asking a friend or family member to officiate can seem like an easy place to save money. Sometimes it works beautifully. But your officiant has one job that’s pretty important: MAKE SURE YOU ACTUALLY GET MARRIED! 💍
This is why I strongly recommend hiring an experienced professional and having a signed booking agreement. Your agreement should clearly spell out what you can expect from your vendor—and what your vendor expects from you—including cancellation policies.
Professional vendors have invested years building their businesses, reputations and procedures. You’re not simply paying for the 20 minutes they’re standing in front of you on your wedding day. You’re paying for their experience, preparation, reliability and commitment to showing up.
Saving money is important. But some wedding-day responsibilities are worth putting in the hands of a professional.

I recently saw this post in a wedding planning group:

💍 WEDDING TIP: Wedding Dress Codes — YAY or NAY? 👗🤵
Wedding dress codes can be surprisingly controversial! Some guests appreciate knowing exactly what to wear, while others feel today’s increasingly specific requirements can go a little too far.
According to Rustic Rose Ranch, a dress code can help set the tone, match the venue and reduce the “What am I supposed to wear?” stress for your guests. It can also create a more cohesive look in your wedding photos.
But there’s another side. Requiring a certain color palette, unusual theme or very formal attire can mean guests have to purchase clothing they may never wear again. Even familiar terms such as “cocktail” and “semi-formal” can be interpreted differently.
❤️ My Wedding Tip: Give your guests guidance—not an assignment.
If you want a dress code, keep it clear, simple and realistic. Consider your venue, season and your guests’ budgets. And if you’re using something less obvious like “Garden Party Attire,” explain what you mean on your wedding website. Rustic Rose Ranch also suggests friendly language such as “We suggest…” or “We invite you to wear…” rather than making it sound like a demand.

💍 WEDDING TIP: How Young Is Too Young for a Ring Bearer or Flower Girl?
Those tiny attendants can create some of the sweetest—and most unpredictable—moments of the entire wedding! ❤️
A recent story in PEOPLE is the perfect example. A 2-year-old flower girl named Maeve missed her nap and fell asleep before it was time to walk down the aisle. Instead of stressing over it, her grandparents stepped in: Grandma carried the sleeping flower girl while Grandpa took over the very important job of scattering the petals. The spontaneous family moment ended up going viral. People.com

So, is there such a thing as too young? According to Brides, flower girls and ring bearers are typically around 4 to 7 years old, with children over 9 often moving into junior wedding-party roles. Children under 4 may have more difficulty following directions—or may simply decide they have other plans! Brides

As an officiant, my advice is: if having that special little person in your ceremony matters to you, include them—but have a backup plan. An adult can walk with them, a wagon works wonderfully for toddlers, and once they reach the altar, let them sit with family rather than expecting them to stand through the ceremony. And please—don’t give a very young ring bearer the real rings! 💍
Most importantly, don’t expect perfection. Sometimes the toddler who cries, runs the wrong direction, refuses to walk—or sleeps through the whole thing—creates the moment everyone remembers. ❤️
