Cumbia is more than just a rhythmā€”it is a movement, a tradition, and a heartbeat that connects generations. With its roots in Colombiaā€™s Caribbean coast, cumbia emerged from the fusion of Indigenous, African, and Spanish influences. Originally a dance accompanied by flutes and drums, it soon evolved, absorbing new instruments and styles as it spread throughout Latin America.

From Mexicoā€™s cumbia sonidera to Peruā€™s psychedelic cumbia, the rhythm has continued to transform, crossing borders and inspiring new generations of musicians and dancers. Today, cumbia has reached audiences worldwide, uniting people through its infectious beat and celebratory spirit.

A Night of Music and Dance
The Festival de Cumbias brings together some of Chicagoā€™s most exciting cumbia performers & DJā€™s, each showcasing a unique take on this rich musical tradition:

Pachanka Music Culture | Events ā€“ FITZGERALDS FREE Thursday Latin Music Series celebrates the diversity of Latin American musicā€”bringing everything from Rock en EspaƱol, trova, and soul to folkloric traditions, classic rancheras, cumbias and beyond.

Join us every Thursday and experience why FitzGeraldā€™s continues to be one of Illinoisā€™ premier live music venues. Recently recognized as the first music club in Illinois to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, FitzGeraldā€™s has also been honored as the Best Suburban Music Venue by the Chicago Reader. Presenting quality live music fo over 100 years.
