‼️ SUPER long post alert - BCYF edition‼️
8 days. A whole lot of grilled cheese. Even more memories.
Every year, today, the Sunday after the Berkeley County Youth Fair ends, I like to take an hour or two before hooking up to the trailer and towing it home to just sit back and reflect on the week we just had.
And every year, it brings a whirlwind of emotions.
There’s the exhaustion, obviously. 😂 Eight straight days inside this trailer will take just about everything you’ve got. But once things get quiet and I have a chance to look back on the week, the exhaustion isn’t what stands out.
The first thing that comes to mind is our food truck friends. ❤️
There’s a community that forms behind these concession windows every year. We’re all tired. We’re all hot. We’re all insanely busy. But somehow there are still plenty of laughs, jokes, helping each other out and checking on each other along the way. This makes one of the most grueling weeks of our year so much better, and we’re incredibly thankful for all of y’all. I know I’m going to forget some people but here it goes: Titan BBQ - Tuckers Pucker - Tads Dairy Barn - Funnel N Around-Funnel Cakes - Simply Smoothies - POP POP SODA SHOP - Almost Heaven Frozen Custard & Treats - Pizza City - The Plate WV
Then there’s our crew.
They put in WORK this week. Eight days of long hours, nonstop orders, heat, sore feet, late nights and then getting up and doing it all over again the next day.
There are moments when the line stretches farther than we can see and we’re all running on fumes…and they just keep going. They laugh, they joke, they pick each other up, and most importantly, they care about the food leaving our window and the people on the other side of it.
Julie and I could never do a week like this without the people standing beside us inside that trailer. We know what we ask of them during fair week, and we don’t take for granted the fact that they continue to show up, work their butts off and represent toasted the way they do.
We’re incredibly proud of this crew. ❤️
Then there’s YOU, the toasted family…
The new customers who tried toasted for the first time this week. The familiar faces we look forward to seeing every year. And the people who have been showing up at our window since this whole crazy adventure started back in 2021. This one really gets me. Five years later, some of the same people who supported us when we were brand new are still standing in our lines, ordering their favorites, bringing their families and telling their friends about us.
And every year, there are new faces joining them.
Y’all are the real MVPs. 🧀❤️
Lastly, there’s the fair itself.
As exhausted as we are when these eight days are over, we never lose sight of how grateful and honored we are to be part of this fair. This week is about so much more than food trucks, rides and fair food. It’s about the kids. It’s about families. It’s about agriculture, hard work, responsibility, tradition, and giving the next generation a place to learn, grow and be proud of what they’ve accomplished.
What this fair means to our community, and what it does for the youth of Berkeley County, is truly something special.
So now it’s time to hook up the trailer, pull out of the fairgrounds and head home.
Another Berkeley County Youth Fair is officially in the books.
