Last words on Sunflowers...when to harvest.
To obtain the most vase life, harvest your Sunflowers when the petals are just beginning to lift. They will continue to open in the vase. This not only gives you more time to enjoy these beautiful flowers, it also gives pests less opportunity to damage them. If you are not growing them to cut, let them go to seed in your landscape or garden. Not only will you be providing for the pollinators during the growing season, but their seed heads also provide food for birds and other animals as well as more than enough to collect for yourself for future plantings. You might even get volunteers next year from the seeds that drop! Win/Win! You still have time to get some planted for Fall blooms!
Fun Sunflower Fact:
The tallest Sunflower ever recorded stood at over 30 feet! π»
