Last words on Sunflowers...when to harvest.
To obtain the most vase life, harvest your Sunflowers when the petals are just beginning to lift. They will continue to open in the vase. This not only gives you more time to enjoy these beautiful flowers, it also gives pests less opportunity to damage them. If you are not growing them to cut, let them go to seed in your landscape or garden. Not only will you be providing for the pollinators during the growing season, but their seed heads also provide food for birds and other animals as well as more than enough to collect for yourself for future plantings. You might even get volunteers next year from the seeds that drop! Win/Win! You still have time to get some planted for Fall blooms!

Fun Sunflower Fact:
The tallest Sunflower ever recorded stood at over 30 feet! 🌻

As Friday begins, I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming weekend's pleasant weather. I'm thankful for the temporary reprieve from the extreme heat. Our garden will be closed this weekend for much-needed maintenance, but we'll be back with bouquets next week. I hope you have a great weekend.

More on Sunflowers....
Sunflowers can be direct sown in your garden or landscape or started in cell trays, pots, etc. One thing to keep in mind when you direct sow is our feathered and furry friends.πŸ¦β€β¬›πŸΏπŸ‡ When the seeds germinate and break through the soil, they still have the seed cap attached to the top of the stem. Our little animal friends spot them and see a yummy snack. You can use bird netting and garden stakes to fashion a protective barrier, if growing on a smaller scale, and remove when the seedlings are more mature. However, If you have heavy deer pressure, be aware that they love sunflowers and will eat them at virtually any stage. πŸ˜ͺ

Fun Sunflower fact:
Every part of a Sunflower is edible including the petals, seeds, roots and stem. No wonder the deer love them.

In yesterday's post, we talked about Sunflowers coming in many different colors. Below are just a few examples. These are Procut Plum, Procut White Lite and I believe the other is a branching variety called Joker. If you plan to cut them for yourself or others, be sure to choose pollenless varieties because no one wants flowers that are dropping pollen that will stain your fingers, clothes, table...literally everything! The seed pack will tell you if they are pollenless. If you are growing just for visual beauty in your garden or landscape, a pollenless variety may not be important for you. You still have plenty of time to have Sunflowers this season, so get growing!

Fun Sunflower fact:
Did you know that you can influence the size of your blooms by how close you plant them? Flower Farmers who sell to florists or sell market bouquets or vase arrangements usually space thier Sunflowers 4-6 inches apart to produce smaller, more manageable blooms. Want them big and beautiful? Space you seeds or seedlings farther apart and consider varieties like Mammoth.

Let's talk Sunflowers! Like Tulips in Spring, Sunflowers in Summer just make people happy. And we are not talking just your standard yellow petals with dark center Sunflowers anymore. There are so many varieties and colors to choose from. Below is one of my favorites, Procut Goldlite DMR.

Fun Sunflower fact #1
Did you know that your Sunflowers follow the sun? When the sun rises, they will face the East. When the sun sets, they will be facing West! Seriously!

Playing with floral paint and these Limelight Hydrangeas this morning. The hand-painted pitcher was a gift from my Mom.🩷 Do you enjoy experimenting with flowers either real or silks? Maybe you're a house plant person (this is NOT my strong suit) or you successfully grow Orchids (also a fail) or maybe you have a gorgeous landscape or garden. Whatever your passion...drop pictures in the comments! I'd love to see what you grow! Extra 🩷 if I see some weeds because it makes me not feel so bad about mine. The struggle is real.🀣
