Meet Kayla! She joined The Rhythm Belles in December of 2022 after coming across a post announcing auditions post-pandemic. Never having danced jazz, let alone vernacular jazz, Kayla thought she'd give it a shot after having taught herself how to roller skate pre-pandemic. She found a love for creating roller skating routines and through that the audition post found her as it was targeted towards many different groups, including roller skaters.
When asked what her favorite routine is, she said, "I really love the Charleston routine. It's one of our high-precision routines and it was such a great challenge to learn. I got to perform it at our Rhythm Belles and Cocktails party back in 2023 and the energy from the audience fueled my every move! We also perform this routine for gigs around town. I've gotten to dance this routine at the Mount Baker Theatre and at the Chuckanut Distillery Event space. It's so engrained now in my muscle memory, it's hard not to dance when I hear any version of the Charleston."
When asked what her favorite thing about being involved with the troupe, she said, "I really love the community that The Rhythm Belles has introduced me to. We occasionally perform at local dance events like Lindy at the Leo with B'ham Hop and the Bellingham Traditional Jazz Society which are great for social dancing; an activity that I had no idea existed before I had found The Rhythm Belles. Now I'm hooked and can't get enough of all the different ways to enjoy vernacular jazz dance!"
