“It was a spectacular show, with huge fireworks, 300,000 spectators on the Strip, and a simulated cannon volley launched by Steve Wynn from Buccaneer Bay that initiated the implosion sequence.” On the Las Vegas Strip, capital of the fantastic, developers implode outdated hotel-casinos once their worth has expired. TIMES SQUARE LAS VEGAS is a performance album that dances with the seductive allure of personal transformation alongside this capitalistic urge to demolish + rebuild. Is change predicated on destruction? Must we be in a constant state of re-invention to earn our place? How is a person like a building? How is a performer like a casino? Should we even be trying to escape, or could we just stay here?
Kye Grant Kauffman (Kye Alive) is a performance artist and voice actor whose work traverses music, dance, theater, and participatory art. They toured widely as a member of Brooklyn band Ava Luna (2010-19) before hatching from a dew drop as pop alien Jennifer Vanilla (2015-25), through which they released motivational dance music, hosted a public access TV show, crowd surfed at MoMA PS1, and appointed themself A.I.R. of Times Square. Described as “Madonna meets Hey Arnold meets Michael Alig meets Grace Jones meets infinity,” Kye has performed at Museum of Modern Art, Lincoln Center, Apollo Theater, Joe’s Pub, and hundreds of other venues across the continents. They reside in Portland, OR, where they received an MFA in Art + Social Practice from Portland State University.
