A couple weeks ago (Sept 30) Beahive and The Highlands Current convened biz owners, community leaders, and visionaries at our Main Street Summit.

We tackled shared challenges and forged powerful partnerships to invest in the vibrant future of Beacon.

We heard varied perspectives from 3 Main St owners in an interactive panel discussion moderated by Beahive founder Scott Tillitt, who founded Beahive on Main St in 2009 (and founded and chaired a Main St, localism-focused nonprofit for many years).

We rolled up our sleeves for honest conversations over 2 rounds of facilitated breakout sessions.

And we connected over drinks and bites. And gave out door prizes from Main St businesses.

The feedback was incredible, and we’ll do it again! (Stay tuned.)

Say Hi to Our Community Ambassador:
Jesse Carrey-Chan

I’M A(N)…
performer, UX designer, floral designer, choreographer, houseplant guru.

I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT…
storytelling, hiking, philosophy, immersive experiences, dancing, singing, collaborating, laughing.

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR WORK.
I work as a full-stack product designer with experience in cybersecurity, civic tech, fintech, and the beauty and wellness marketplace.

In my spare time, I freelance as a floral designer with Flora Good Times, create immersive experiences and do story consulting with my company Rebis, and love to get on the mic at Broadway in Beacon.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I love using storytelling and expression to help others connect more to their heart and the human experience.

When I create work, my hope is to touch the audience and move them to a deeper sense of feeling, compassion, and awe. Most of allI love collaborating and connecting with others.

HOW DID YOU START (YOUR WORK)?
I graduated from Carnegie Mellon with a BFA in Acting and Musical Theater, and moved to New York City to work in commercial theater. There, I became infatuated with site specific and immersive experiences, which led me to get involved in experience design, both in the physical and digital space.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR WORK GOING IN THE NEXT YEAR… FIVE?
My dream is to work at the intersection of creativity and technology, and how to leverage AI to create interactive, personalized environments that enhance and interact with live experiences.

You’ll also see me creating more movement and sonic-based experiences in the Hudson Valley, and releasing an album of original music.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT BEAHIVE?
I love the warm, focused space that helps me get stuff done while feeling a sense of community. I absolutely love all the events that are hosted, and Scott’s passion for nurturing this amazing community!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
My favorite thing is how aligned everyone’s values are in the community. We all seem to value nature, human connection, and, well, community!

Our community ambassadors help Beahive make (metaphorical) honey.

You could say they’re the “bea’s” knees (ahem)!

We got out of the hive and into the fields for a team outing this week at Fishkill Farms.

Apple picking and cider drinking and the connection that Beahive aims for.

THE SPELLING BEA:
BEACON’S FIRST ADULT SPELLING COMPETITION

Fri, Sept 26
7 – 9 PM (doors: 6:30)
Beahive Beacon

Think you can still spell “definitely” without autocorrect? Time to prove it!

Join us for an evening where adults rediscover the pure joy (and terror) of standing up, spelling out loud, and potentially embarrassing themselves in the most delightful way possible.

This isn’t your elementary school spelling bee — expect words that would make your 4th-grade teacher blush, vocabulary that reflects our wonderfully complicated adult lives, and plenty of good-natured heckling from the audience.

You can compete, or simply watch and heckle.

Hosted by author Gabe Henry and Beahive’s community activator Eli Walker.

SAY HI TO OUR COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR:
JULIE SELTZER

I’M A(N)…
Hebrew calligrapher, educator, storyteller, runner, doggie mama, and a half century old.

I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT…
staying curious.

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR WORK.
I work as a Hebrew scribe, which means that I am trained to write and repair torah scrolls and other Jewish texts. Torah scrolls are written by hand, with quill and ink on parchment (for real!). I also teach the craft, and present on various aspects of my work at synagogues, universities, and cultural institutions locally and nationally.

This year, I also started an MA at Middlebury College in Teaching Foreign Language.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I love that I’m doing something analog in a digital world. Not that digital is bad — but I like that while it’s a traditional art, it’s in some ways quite countercultural: who would waste their time on such a thing? Me, apparently.

I also love how people connect emotionally to the scroll, whether it holds significance for them historically, personally, religiously, or culturally. I help them access that connection, and that feels good.

HOW DID YOU START (YOUR WORK)?
The idea to learn scribal arts just popped into my head one day, seemingly out of nowhere. I had never even held a calligraphy pen. But I committed to learning, found teachers, and practiced and practiced (a lot).

It’s fairly new for women to pursue this craft, since it’s not really accepted in the Orthodox world, but the flip side to that is that communities who are egalitarian and/or want to push boundaries, have been eager to engage the services of a woman.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR WORK GOING IN THE NEXT YEAR… FIVE?
This year, I will be starting a training program for folks that are serious learners. I could see this growing, providing an opportunity to women and non-binary folks in the Jewish community that would not be available to them otherwise. Also, I would like to give a TEDx talk one day!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT BEAHIVE?
I love how Beahive builds community through such a wide range of community events. It’s great because even those who aren’t (yet) members can connect with each other and expand their horizons.

Bzzz...

Inspired by the coworking and localism movements, BEAHIVE is a pioneering space for work and community and possibilities, the first and only of our kind in the Hudson Valley. At the most basic level, we provide a member-powered, creative work environment for entrepreneurs, the creative class of freelancers and consultants, and microbusinesses. But we’re more than that.

We’re driven by the dream of vibrant, diverse and inclusive Hudson Valley communities — supported by an economy that is sustainable, locally rooted and human scale.

Why is BEAHIVE spelled funny? It’s a cute reference to Beacon, NY (BEA-HIVE, Bea-con…). The original BEAHIVE opened in May 2009 right in the heart of Beacon's Main Street in an artisan-renovated 1907 Bell Telephone building.

Over the years we’ve swarmed additional hives in Downtown Albany and opened and closed in Kingston and Peekskill. More Hudson Valley hives are being planned.
