It’s never about the size of the guest list.

About 80 people at last night’s wedding, and this group came ready to celebrate.

Every wedding has its own personality. My job is to figure out what connects that group of people and use the music to create the moments they’ll remember.

Small wedding. Big energy. Great night.

One of the things I love about what I do is using music to help create memories.

And sometimes the best memories are the ones nobody could have planned.

This is one of mine.

The very first wedding this bride had ever attended was her own… and a little rain wasn’t going to stop Sophia and Houston from having the time of their lives!

Instead of running inside, they embraced it — and so did their friends and family. Music playing, everyone dancing in the rain, and a moment I’ll never forget.

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that you can prepare all you want for a wedding, but once that dance floor opens, you have to pay attention to what’s happening in front of you.

You can plan the music, take requests and have a pretty good idea of what’s going to work — but every crowd is different.

Sometimes you change directions. Sometimes you take a chance on a song. And sometimes the best thing you can do is leave it alone because the dance floor is doing exactly what it should be doing.

That’s one of my favorite parts of what I do.

No two weddings are the same, and figuring out what works for that particular group of people is a big part of the job.

Some events are just a little more personal.

Today I had the opportunity to provide sound for an MRC Industries event in Kalamazoo.

Most people know me for weddings and DJing, but the “sound tech” side of what I do has always been a big part of my business. Today that meant walking into a warehouse, building a sound system around the space, and making sure everyone could clearly hear the message being shared.

But this one hit closer to home.

My wife and I are guardians for her brother, John “JR” Ross. JR suffered a traumatic brain injury early in life, and organizations that provide opportunities, support and a sense of belonging for people with disabilities mean something very different when you have someone like JR in your family.

MRC’s mission is centered around helping individuals with disabilities build independence, find purpose and become part of their community.

So today I wasn’t just the guy providing the sound, I was pretty proud to be a small part of what was happening in that room.

I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I still enjoy it.

The equipment has changed. The technology has changed. But the way I prepare hasn’t. I’ve always given it everything I have.

The part that matters most hasn’t changed either.

A full dance floor. People laughing, singing, and having a night they’ll remember. Seeing everything come together after all the planning that went into it.

I’ve never been interested in simply showing up, playing music, and collecting a check.

I want the event to go well. I want the couple, the client, and their guests to have a great experience.

That still matters to me.

It’s the things you DON’T see that often make the biggest difference.

Every wedding has its own little challenges — the room, the acoustics, the location, background noise, live musicians, ceremony audio…the list goes on.

Most of the time, my couples never even know when I make an adjustment, add a microphone, change the sound setup, or work with another vendor to make something better.

And that’s exactly how it should be.

After years of weddings and working as a sound tech, I’ve learned that some of the most important things I do happen quietly behind the scenes.

The guests don’t need to know why everything worked.

They just need to enjoy it.

A great wedding shouldn’t just LOOK good. It should SOUND good.

Before I was a DJ, I was a sound tech — and that background still influences how I approach every event.

Clear ceremony audio.
Toasts everyone can actually understand.
Music that fills the room without overpowering the guests closest to the speakers.
And when it’s time to dance… plenty of energy where it belongs.

Good sound isn’t just about buying good equipment. Speaker placement, proper levels and knowing how to use that equipment all matter.

Most guests will never notice any of it.

They’ll just know it sounded great.
