What did freedom look like along the Ohio River?

For thousands of enslaved people, crossing from Kentucky into Ohio meant the chance for a new life. Clermont County became an important part of the Underground Railroad, with communities like New Richmond, Felicity, Bethel, and Williamsburg helping freedom seekers on their journey north.

The stories are filled with courage, risk, and determination. In 1862, villagers in New Richmond stood up to an enslaver and helped secure the freedom of LeRoy Lee, who later served in the Union Army and returned to build a life in the community. In Williamsburg, abolitionists like Charles Huber and Marcus Sims quietly guided hundreds of freedom seekers along hidden routes despite the danger of arrest and imprisonment.
