June 6, 2026, 6:30 p.m. Poetry Reading WRITING THE PRAIRIE

Join three former Montana Poets Laureate M.L. Smoker, Melissa Kwasny, and Tami Haaland for a free public reading entitled Writing the Prairie, exploring themes of time, landscape, environmental change, and the important role of Indigenous people in the prairies of Montana.

M.L. Smoker’s poetry collection, Another Attempt at Rescue, and her graphic novel Thunderous engage questions of Native American identity, history, language, and
culture.

Tami Haaland’s latest book, If I Had Said Beauty, is dedicated to “known and unknown” ancestors, exploring all that lies behind one’s sense of self while being grounded in encounters with wild and domestic life and intimate moments of loss and connection.

Melissa Kwasny, a recent Artist in Residence at the Enrico Science Center near the Missouri Breaks, will read from her essay “The American Prairie” and a new series of poems entitled “What the Prairie Knows”

Saturday, May 2, 2026, 5-8 p.m. ART OPENING featuring work by Kris Larson, Nan Parson & MJ Williams.

Picture 1 by MJ Williams who loves to paint with watercolors en plain air. In winter she has to resort to her kitchen table.

Picture 2 by Kris Larson who worked as a geographer for 30 years. While many encaustic painters strive to create a smooth surface, Kris loves color and texture and often makes a painting with dozens of layers of wax paint. She regularly incorporates old maps, historic magazines, and other pieces of paper.

Picture 3 by Nan Parsons “October I was in upstate NY painting watercolor outside with a good friend, colleague and former Montana Artists Refuge resident, Laura Taylor. A glorious time in all respects. The oil paintings (inspired by the NY experience) now showing at the Art Mine were painted on my return to Basin.”

Club Flamenco is a unique ensemble that blends contemporary European and Western music with the passionate traditions of Flamenco. Founder and guitarist Geno Kreis, together with bassist April Kreis, lead a lineup featuring talented percussionists Chrysti Smith, Doug Wales, and Ben Simpson, whose vibrant rhythms support every intricate style, or “palo,” in the set.

A highlight of every performance is the artistry and emotion brought by dancer Nicole Loya, whose flare and expressive movements truly embody the spirit of Flamenco. As tradition holds, the energy of Flamenco is fully realized with an enthusiastic audience—so be ready to clap, cheer, and shout “olé” as you join the community in celebration!

This promises to be an immersive evening filled with music, rhythm, and dance—a true taste of Flamenco right here at home. Bring a friend and come ready to experience the artistry and heart of Club Flamenco at The Art Mine on Thursday, September 11, with doors opening at 6pm.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
