Just look at this staple length 👀 some sheep breeds, like Mr. Woodstock here, need two hair cuts a year in Spring and Fall 💇🏼‍♀️ Without it they get matted, too dirty, and develop skin issues. More wool = more fiber projects, right? 😀

Pray these babies 🙏 were expecting a low temp of 40F this week. Zinnias do not like to be cold below 50. These plants are strong and early on in their production this fall. So I’m hopeful (but not confident) these beauties will make it through to see and the sharp jump back up into warm fall temps again until frost truly hits later this season. I harvested as much as I could today to make bouquets and dry for later arrangements just in case.
🥶
If you can’t tell by this and previous posts, I really love zinnias. Tho it’s not a fav among floral designers because of their unpredictable vase life. Zinnias remind me of my mother’s front yard gardens growing up. My kid-brain remembers them as tall and bright and big as they continue to be in my adulthood.

Not bad for a morning of off-&-on sideways rain 🌧️
The last sunflowers of the season are coming out of the field. But I’m looking forward to the loads of amaranth, zinnia, Jerusalem artichoke, marigold, and cosmos coming this fall!

Back to the flower game after 2 week visit with family in MO & CA ( returned with a Covid souvenir in tow 🤧) whenever I take breaks, no matter how brief, during the growing season I’m convinced everything will wither and die without my eyes on it everyday. But it’s always nearly how I left it, with some new blooms emerging. It’s a reminder that everything will be ok and carry on…

No weekend and shop bouquets available for the next two weeks. I’ll be back at it the week of Sept 8th. Instead I’m taking time with family members I haven’t seen in some time, including my 103 yr-old grandma. Taking this late summer break to help usher in a shoulder season of transition and clear my mind to begin planning 2026 flower production.

It’s been (thankfully) a cooler and more overcast this week in Maryland. It’s giving a glimpse into fall-like weather. The summer blooms remain strong and prolific. I love the way they seem to glow in the evening light ✨
