Did you know that Austin Woman’s Club, which purchased Chateau Bellevue in 1929 and has maintained it ever since, awards a scholarship annually?

The Emilie Wheelock Howson/Mohrmann Scholarship was established to honor the first financial secretary of the Woman’s Club, who donated funds toward the club’s addition to the home, which included the ballroom, elevator, and parking lot.

As the Woman’s Club is dedicated to the preservation of the mansion, the Austin Woman’s Club Howson/Mohrmann Scholarship acknowledges female students currently attending the University of Texas at Austin who are graduating seniors or current graduate students. Applicants must be graduates of a high school in Texas and they must be pursuing a graduate degree in architecture or historical preservation.

Austin Woman’s Club has not only been preserving Chateau Bellevue for decades — it has also been supporting the future of historical preservation and young women in the community.

🗝️✨CHATEAU SECRETS✨🪞

Did you know that carved fretwork was a status symbol for Victorian families?

Major Ira Evans renovated Chateau Bellevue in 1892, updating the interior in the Late Victorian Romanesque style. One of the finest additions was the hand carved cherry fretwork decorating the staircase to the bedrooms on the third floor. Fretwork is an interlaced decorative design that is either carved in low relief on a solid background or cut out with a fretsaw, coping saw, jigsaw, or scroll saw.

Not wanting to damage the spectacular fretwork, Evans added a small porch and entry on the east side of the house and installed a pulley system to lift trunks and luggage to the third floor.

The Austin Woman’s Club was fortunate to find an artisan skilled in fretwork who happened to have the proper wood scraps to repair a few broken places several years ago. Unsurprisingly, the cherry fretwork is now a popular backdrop during photoshoots at the Chateau!

🗝️✨ CHATEAU SECRETS ✨🪞

Did you know Chateau Bellevue was once home to Ira Hobart Evans—a Civil War brevet major, businessman, and legislator?

After serving in the Union Army, receiving a Medal of Honor, Evans made Texas his home and spent decades quietly shaping Austin’s future. Evans became Texas’ youngest-ever speaker of the House and helped develop railroads across the state. If his resume wasn’t already impressive enough, he was also a cofounder and director of the Austin National Bank.

Plus, Evans played a key role in supporting education for African Americans during Reconstruction and later became a trustee of Huston-Tillotson, now one of the nation’s most respected Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

From battlefields to boardrooms to Bellevue, Evans made his mark on Austin history!
