We sat down with playwright Raul Garza to talk about the memories, places, and experiences that inspired frijolebeans—and what this story means to him.

Why Frijolebeans?

For Raul, it began with memory.

The river.
The trees.
The streets.
His grandmother’s kitchen.
The smell of food.
The feeling of being home.

frijolebeans asks us what happens when we return to the places that shaped us—and discover that the memories we thought we’d forgotten were waiting for us all along.

Sometimes the magic isn’t something we find.
Sometimes it was always there.

Teatro Vivo presents the world premiere of frijolebeans, a new play by Raul Garza, directed by Oscar Franco!

When three siblings battle over their late mother’s final pot of frijoles, unexpected frijol-guides emerge to challenge what they know about identity, privilege, Latinidad, and familia. What begins as a fight over beans becomes a magical journey through everything they’ve inherited—and what they’ll carry forward.
