Fantastic Fest 2024 film, CHAIN REACTIONS, has dropped their trailer.

Fifty years after Tobe Hooper’s THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE shocked the world and forever changed cinema, CHAIN REACTIONS explores the film’s seismic impact through the eyes (and memories) of five great artists: Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama. From childhood traumas to sensory jolts, their stories reveal just how deeply the saw still cuts.

Before we dive headfirst into this year’s lineup (and trust us, there’s plenty to feast on), we thought it’d be fun to celebrate the outstanding number of world premieres by remembering some previous ones.

From the neon-soaked gun-fu of John Wick that launched an action phenomenon to the haunting heartbreak of Tigers Are Not Afraid to double tap kills and laughs of Zombieland, Fantastic Fest has always been a place where unforgettable films take their first bow.

So tell us: what’s been your favorite world premiere at a past Fantastic Fest? And which one are you most excited to see this year?

In 2019 Takashi Miike brought FIRST LOVE to Fantastic Fest 2019, a wild yakuza thriller/rom-com. We also honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award before a special screening of his delightfully bizarre THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS.

With his blend of on-screen anarchy, absurd humor, and heart in unexpected places, Miike is one of cinema’s most fearless storytellers.

Short filmmakers deliver bold visions, brutal shocks, belly laughs, and bizarre worlds in the span of minutes. They prove you don’t need two hours to leave a lasting mark…just the guts to go all in.

Here’s to the short filmmakers who have kept Fantastic Fest screens weird, wild, and wonderfully unpredictable! What short film have you seen at the fest that stuck with you long after the credits rolled?

Whether it's an episode of Doug Loves Movies or one of his hilarious movie interruptions, Doug Benson always brings his signature humor and love of film to Fantastic Fest. It's a joy to have him at the fest, whether he's on the mic or in the audience taking in the chaos.

Doug definitely loves movies, and Fantastic Fest definitely loves Doug.

In honor of TOGETHER hitting the theaters this weekend, we’re spotlighting some unforgettable body horror moments from Fantastic Fests past.

From bone-snapping witchcraft to animal transformations and cannibal cravings, these films pushed the boundaries of the body physically, psychologically, and viscerally.

What’s your favorite body horror film or scene from the fest?

Today is Christmas in July, and the only appropriate way to celebrate is flashing back to when Anna and the Apocalypse had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest! Musical numbers. Teen angst. Zombies. And yes, Christmas. 🎄 The cast brought their infectious energy to Austin, turning the end of the world into one hell of a holiday horror party.

From FF programming to the House of Psychotic Women sidebar in 2012 to premiering Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror in 2021 and more, Kier-La Janisse has long been part of the Fantastic Fest family and a vital voice in genre film.

We’re thrilled to congratulate her on her latest milestone: wrapping her first narrative feature, The Occupant of the Room, a ghostly adaptation of the Algernon Blackwood story starring Don McKellar. We can’t wait to see what horrors await! 😱

Fantastic Fest isn’t the only one celebrating a 20th anniversary this year…

Neil Marshall’s THE DESCENT was first released in UK theaters in 2005 (and hit US screens the following year), dragging us into one of the most claustrophobic, blood-soaked nightmares in modern horror. Happy 20th to a film that reminds us never to go caving!
