STRIKE THAT MATCH by Kevin Kirkwood
Sept 5-27
STRIKE THAT MATCH is an immersive installation that reconstructs the emotional and physical architecture of a once-shared domestic space; a home that, over time, became something more transient, volatile, and ultimately symbolic. In late May, Kirkwood began a personal excavation, translating memory into material. Through this exhibition, he invites viewers into a space shaped by layered intimacy, rupture, and renewal. This installation brings together symbolic objects that reflect both the comfort and chaos of shared living. Handmade elements in the form of painted canvas, stained glass, quilted fabric; evoke familial warmth and intimacy. In contrast, moments of rupture emerge through charred fragments of wood and torn paper, signaling emotional intensity, sexuality, and transformation. This interplay between the tender and the volatile reveals the unstable boundaries of domestic life, where acts of care coexist with moments of upheaval. STRIKE THAT MATCH is not merely a recreation of a place, it is a reckoning. A hybrid of home and terminal, the installation captures the threshold where relationships ignite, unravel, and burn away.

About Our 2025 Juror:
Adam P. (AP) Faust is a creative based in Atlanta. He holds a BFA from Guilford College, where his 2014 sculpture thesis featured found object sculptures inspired by explorations in dreams, memory, and the woods of Durham and Greensboro, North Carolina. After graduating, Faust embraced collage as his primary art form, delving into surrealist explorations of the subconscious through dreams and automatism. He utilizes collage to reshape narratives by repurposing physical media in his own work and shares collage as a technique to overcome creative blocks, teach collaboration, and facilitate communication through professional workshops and community-based projects.
Faust has presented his work at Kolaj Fest New Orleans 2024, for Collage Artists of America, and was in last year’s SEEDS X at Westobou. Earlier this year, he showcased a decade’s worth of collage work in his debut solo exhibition, IT’S ABOUT TIME. He continues to exhibit in group shows, mostly around the Atlanta area, energized by the synergy of the creative community.
Currently, Faust serves as the Operations Director at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. In this role, he curates exhibitions and programs in collaboration with various Atlanta arts organizations, educators, and artists at all stages of their careers. Highlights of his curatorial work include producing an exhibition of Howard Finster’s work, Shannon McCollum’s FILA retrospective, Alice Woodruff’s Warrior Women, and curating Echoes: 100 Years of Surrealism’s Influence. He juried the Atlanta High School Art Show as a part of the Atlanta Dogwood Festival this spring, and is excited to return to Augusta this Fall for SEEDS 11.

Artist in Residence Program
Next Residency Dates: JAN-DEC 2026
Application Due: JULY 18, 2025

Westobou aims to inspire creativity in artistic expression and community advancement. This inspired us to create a year-long Artist in Residence program for artists and creatives in the Augusta area.

The Westobou Artist in Residence program awards free studio space to an emerging or mid-career Augusta-based visual artist for one year at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (GHIA). The program provides a stipend for research, tools and supplies to build a body of work for an exhibition at Westobou Gallery. In collaboration with the GHIA, the artist in residence has the opportunity to teach a workshop series to community members.
