In 1924, Bobby Jones married Mary Rice Malone, whom he had met during his freshman year at Georgia Tech in 1919. Together, they built a loving family with three children: Clara Malone, Robert Tyre III, and Mary Ellen. Despite his extraordinary achievements on the golf course, Bobby always put his family first.
As he once said, "My wife and children came first, followed by my legal profession. Finally, and never in a life by itself, came golf."
Today, the Jones family continues to honor his extraordinary legacy through charitable work, a dedicated website, licensed apparel, and more, keeping his story alive for future generations.

Happy 4th !

Just over a month after accomplishing what many believed was impossible—winning all four major golf championships in a single year—Bobby Jones made a decision that stunned the sports world: he retired from competitive golf at the age of 28. His extraordinary achievement, often referred to as the “Impregnable Quadrilateral,” included victories at the British Amateur, British Open, U.S. Open, and U.S. Amateur, a feat that has never been repeated. More than a champion, Bobby Jones was, and remains, a symbol of grace, humility, and excellence in the game of golf and beyond.

Let’s take you back to 1930, a year that changed golf forever.
Cyril James Hastings Tolley, the accomplished British amateur and multi-time Walker Cup player (1922, 1923, 1924, 1926, 1930, and 1934), didn’t win the British Amateur that year. But he played a match that still echoes in golf history, not for the win, but for the legend he nearly stopped. His fourth-round opponent? None other than Bobby Jones.
This wasn’t just any match. It was the opening leg of what would become Jones’ legendary Grand Slam. And Tolley nearly ended it before it even began. The two battled until the 19th hole, where a perfectly positioned stymie sealed Tolley’s fate. In those days, the ball between yours and the hole stayed right where it was, and Jones’ was in the way. It was arguably Jones’ toughest test of the year, and a match for the ages.

The legacy of Bobby Jones isn’t just etched in the history of golf—it continues to inspire generations through education and sportsmanship.
We’ve already talked about the Bob Jones Award, the USGA’s highest honor for distinguished sportsmanship in golf. But did you know his impact extends beyond the course?
Through Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. Scholarship Program, eight scholars—four from Emory University and four from St. Andrews University in Scotland—have the opportunity to learn and grow through an academic exchange. And that’s not all! A special partnership between St. Andrews and Georgia Tech also facilitates the exchange of graduate students, further strengthening his legacy.
Today, Bobby Jones’ influence continues to shape lives, especially those of students, proving that his greatness wasn’t just about how he played the game—but how he inspired others to pursue excellence, both on and off the course.
