Originally known as the Phinizy home, the Marion Hatcher Center stands as a testament to history, renamed in honor of Marion Hatcher, the beloved late wife of William G. Hatcher Sr.

This magnificent Georgian-style residence, constructed in 1835, served as the family home of John Phinizy, a prosperous merchant and businessman from Augusta. The original structure boasted three grand stories, adorned with an elegant oval two-story porch and an observatory that graced the west side of the building. An outdoor kitchen, connected to the main house by a charming covered walkway, added to the home’s allure. Once, the grounds were bustling with life, as stables and four smaller homes occupied the very site where the parking lot now lies.

Upon John Phinizy’s passing, the home was bequeathed to his son, Charles H. Phinizy. It was Charles's wife, Mary Lou, who would breathe new life into the residence through a remarkable remodel in 1885. This transformation introduced exquisite Victorian elements, including intricately designed parlor mantels, elegant parquet floors, and sumptuous hand-tooled leather wall coverings. The pièce de résistance was the stunning leaded stained-glass windows that captured the light in a dance of color.

In her quest to enhance the home, Mrs. Phinizy added a fourth floor, and in her later years, she installed a pulley-type elevator—one of the first of its kind in a private residence in Augusta—ensuring her access to every level of her beloved home. The Marion Hatcher Center, with its rich history and architectural splendor, continues to echo the stories of those who once walked its halls, a living monument to the legacy of the Phinizy family.
