Weathering the Storm: 3 Key Strategies for Small Business Owners in Creative Services:

Running a small business in the creative sector is inherently challenging, and today's economic climate adds layers of complexity. With factors like budget constraints, reduced resources, and market uncertainties impacting both clients and vendors, creative professionals must adapt strategically to sustain and grow their businesses. Here are three pivotal strategies to consider:

1. Diversify Your Offerings
Expanding your range of services can open new revenue streams and attract a broader client base. For instance:

Graphic Designers: Offer digital products such as customizable templates or conduct online workshops.

Photographers: Provide virtual photo sessions or stock imagery packages and also market to real estate professionals.

Writers: Create content strategy consultations or develop copywriting courses.

Film/TV Production Creatives: Produce branded content for businesses, offer live streaming services for events, create educational video content, or develop virtual reality experiences.

Flexibility and innovation in your services can position you to better navigate market shifts.

Lastly, use your skills to make money. Produce an event, your skills are the audience draw....a master class, lunch and learn, a hands on diy seminar, etc. and sell tickets online using Event Brite. Write an E-Book and sell on Amazon. All are on my "Make it Happen List" for 2025.

2. Strengthen Client and Community Relationships
Your network is invaluable, especially during downturns. Maintain regular, genuine communication with clients, collaborators, and peers. Engage through personalized check-ins, collaborative projects, or community events. Building and nurturing these relationships can lead to referrals and repeat business, which are crucial when new opportunities are scarce.

3. Enhance Your Digital Footprint
A compelling online presence is essential as clients often research businesses online before making contact. Ensure your website and social media profiles are current, showcasing your best work and client testimonials. Consistent, high-quality content—such as case studies, behind-the-scenes insights, and industry tips—can establish your authority and keep your audience engaged.

By implementing these strategies, creative small business owners can not only withstand economic challenges but also position themselves for future growth. Embrace adaptability, foster strong relationships, and maintain a robust online presence to navigate and thrive during uncertain times. Network like crazy, Your Network is your Net Worth!!!

Check out the behind the scenes. 🎥

I was hired as Production Designer for a Wellstar project, I was presented with the Set "look and feel" they wanted to convey and my team of Carpenters, Assistants and an Art Dept. Coordinator went to work.

With about 3 days of prep, my crew got the job done and executed amazingly. Production booked the location and I scouted the venue with the NYC Director on Facetime since I typically like to see the space prior to load in. As I walked around panning the room with my phone for him to see the scope of the building, we both agreed it was a "go".

I always get brands Pantone colors from the company so paint matching is accurate. "Let's cover the Ikea chair," I thought so I shopped for a vinyl at a local fabric store that actually worked perfectly and had my upholsterer work his magic.

Meanwhile, furniture had to be purchased, picked up, assembled, props rented, and some purchased were painted We put a faux marble contact paper on a cabinet to have an elevated look, walls were to built, sanded, stained and erected, shelves mounted, and led lights installed. Whew that's a lot on short notice but luckily I'm WELL trained on last minute projects

Morning of the shoot, the team flew in from NYC and posted up at video village as we put the finishing touches on the Set. You'll see Dr. Hagler, the Cardiologist, he arrived looking so very young I actually thought he was a stand-in...lol. We shot for the entire afternoon and the client was very pleased!!!!

At wrap I went to my car for a second, returned to Set, walked upstairs where the entire crew and client team were. "We've been looking for you Francine" they all clapped and gave me a standing ovation....true story. I was floored 🤩

I'm a true DIYer which is a major plus for this type of work....yup your girl got skills! I can build, paint, wallpaper, sew, create custom artwork, design, decorate, lead a crew and some more stuff I can't remember right now. All thanks to a Caribbean mother who didn't play when it came to playing outside with the neighborhood kids all day, but being in the house where my creativity ran wild.

So, yesssss l'm a perfectionist even down to the small details and absolutely love the challenge of creating different worlds, it's pretty cool to see it all come together and give the client what they were looking for.

I have so many projects to share, but editing videos is soooooo dreadful...lol 😩

How did we do??

The film production industry is experiencing a serious slowdown, and it’s hitting us creatives very hard! With streaming platforms reshaping how content is produced and consumed, traditional production schedules have been cut back drastically, leaving thousands of industry professionals without work. From directors and producers, crew members and set designers like me, the ripple effect is being felt across the board. Studio budget cuts, increased competition from international markets, and the aftermath of the actors and writers strikes have only added to the uncertainty.

For many creatives, finding consistent work in film production has become a major struggle—forcing many of us to pivot to freelance gigs or leave the industry altogether. I have friends across the country who are producers, executive producers and production managers, in LA, NYC and Atlanta....all are having a very hard time!!! One has gone back to school changing careers to nursing, another is bartending and another fighting to stay afloat then lost her home in the recent LA fires. Man, It's crazyyyyyy out here!

This lack of production work isn’t just affecting individuals, it's also taking a toll on local economies. Here in Atlanta, a major production hub, we're seeing the financial impact as film sets have gone dark and spending from production companies dried up. Fewer productions mean fewer jobs—not just for cast and crew but also for local vendors, hospitality, and service industries that depend on the influx of production dollars. We love craft services on set, they're out of work also.

Right now, we have to take these lemons and make lemonade, dig deep since we are extremely creative and must pivot our talents to other areas because it's only gonna get worst. I don't just work on film / tv sets, I design events and interiors and more.

Also, these challenges are forcing us to have conversations about pooling our talents and creating our own content without big studio budgets but investing our "sweat equity" to gain equity in the project on the back end. The problem is people need to survive in the meantime and pay bills that don't stop coming. Whew, the 1st rolls around fast these days!

Breathe, figure out how your skills can translate in other fields and start that journey sooner than later. Keep me posted on how the shift works out for you.

Chow!
