This year's Payne Memorial Concert featured the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble in its first UGA visit since 2012. The eight musicians played three works: Welsh composer Huw Watkins's Octet (commissioned for this tour), Jean Francaix’s delightful Parisian-flavored Octet, and Beethoven's Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20. The latter was enormously popular during Beethoven's lifetime and is still admired as one of the finest septets ever written.
