30 years ago today, *Mortal Kombat* hit theaters.
For anyone who grew up in the 80s/90s, that movie wasn’t just a film—it was a cultural moment.

But what really cracked something open for me was the soundtrack.
Industrial. Metal. Techno. Ambient. Rave. Rock. All mashed together like it *belonged*.
Orbital. KMFDM. Na**lm Death. Fear Factory. Traci Lords. The Immortals. 🔥

In the 90s, movies were often the only place I felt *seen* in my musical tastes. If directors were weaving these songs into epic scenes, then maybe I was on the right path too.

Back then, Athens didn’t really have space for those sounds, so I always felt like the outsider blasting them in my car. But looking back, I realize that’s the whole point—music is about freedom, about following what moves you, no matter who else gets it.

Nostalgia like this reminds me: stay true to your passions. They always lead you somewhere real. ✨

This album is SO GOOD. Even Traci Lords has a song on this!

The Mortal Kombat soundtrack was released 30 years ago today. It accompanies the 1995 film starring Christopher Lambert! This was an excellent soundtrack! This one gave me my first taste of , Type O Negative , , , and . There were three Stabbing Westward songs used in the movie. But they do not appear on the soundtrack. Also, Burton c Bell is the only person who appears twice this, with Fear Factory and GZR ( Geezer Butler band). Tbh I don't remember the movie, but I think highly of these batch of tunes!

20 years ago next month, I played a show at Casa that changed everything.
I linked up with + for an open-format dance party called Moist Heaven —
quite possibly the worst party name ever…
but it lit the fuse for my whole DJ career.
Anything went. No software. No beat counters.
Just a stopwatch, me counting beats by hand, writing it all down so I could stay on point.
🔥 Tonight, I’m bringing 2005 bangers back with for Casa’s 40th.
SE Ohio most folks love guitars, banjos, and anything but DJs or hip hop.
Cool with me — I’ll always show up with that electronic goodness.
SE Ohio isn’t the world (thank God)…

10 years ago in 2015, I was in my 2nd year of trying to be a full time dj in Athens, Ohio. It wasn’t going well. And I was considering other options cause I needed money.
I remember answering the door and it was Steve Patterson who was then campaigning for mayor unopposed. I was like “what’re you doing here, you already won?” We both laughed but then we chatted for a bit and he asked me what I was doing.
I explained I was djing full time and he asked me if I’d be interested in being the director of Ohio brew week as he was on the board but also knew of my experience with Halloween. Looking for extra revenue and opportunities I said absolutely and then he left.

Some time went by and I got the job and I had NO CLUE what I really signed up. I absolutely flubbed that first year in 2016 compared to my others. I asked for help too late, I was in over my head. But I didn’t do such a bad year cause I was NOT fired!

Then I learned from that failure. I grew. I doubled our music budget. I expanded the times for last call. I hired red tail to redo our website. I asked for more money (that was my first real life negotiation!) I scrapped the app and moved the beer list to the website making it more functional and universal. I formalized our volunteer system. I changed how we bring on new board members. I formalized my token team Meredith and Jamie🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾) I created a new sister fall event. I helped create a dinner on the parking garage. I formalized our sign up system for sponsors. Etc etc etc.

Over the years we have grown and thrived where other events have grown stale or withered away. And then one day some one said, “this year, Brew Week is in the top five weeks in terms of tourism dollars brought in for the ENTIRE county.”

WHOA! THAT’S RIDICULOUS. Think about that. Ohio Brew Week celebrated its 20th last week and I’m proud to say I’ve held down 10 of those parties!

This year was a struggle as the landscape and expectations are always changing. But you all showed up again even with the flash floods and thunderstorms!

OHIO BREW WEEK IS RESILIENT and one of the best things to ever happen to me. Thank you all!

Ain't no way it was 30 years ago, but I guess it has to be.

I remember this day so well:

School Kids Uptown had those 5 albums in a 5 disc CD Changer you could preview before you buy and I randomly put this album on because of the art. I skipped to a song called "F**k Up Beats" put on the cheap headphone and was FLOORED.

A minute and half of frenetic bass just relentlessly pushing through the headphones. I bought the album right there on the spot and my chemical brothers obsession began!

Pretty Sure Matt Box was the person working when I bought, this but I have so many memories from School kids they all kinda blur together.

Also, Three Little Birdies Down Beats is the best song on this album filled to the BRIM with bangers. The way it builds a three song crescendo being bracketed by Song to the Siren and F**k Up Beats is beautiful.
