A million years ago, in 1987 exactly, gave me his copy of The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Reading it changed my life; it changed my understanding of the narrative of Black liberation- of activism, self determination, change, of forgiveness and the cruelty of America. Of power.
I grew up in a household in PHX that spoke often of MLK Jr but never of Malcolm X.
Little did i know that a year earlier this opera had its premiere at City Opera. Flash forward to last night. We saw X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X at
What took so long???? What a towering piece. What a fantastical, wonderful, interesting, towering piece that will stay with me for a long time. This work belongs in the canon. I hope we see it again soon.

On Sept 7 we lost Grant Jordon suddenly and tragically. I can honestly say my life was changed the day I met him in the parking lot at ASU, and again the day he died. The man who made me laugh and laugh now has me crying and crying. Thanks a lot, buddy. If he was alive we would laugh over that. He was a good friend, he never met a stranger, and he was ever and always a loving husband to Victoria. A Celebration of Grant Jordan’s Life will be held at The Manor Inn, Plantsville, CT Saturday, Sept 30 @ 5 pm. Please let us know if you would like to attend. If you would like to send condolences to Victoria please dm me- she isn’t on social media. Grant, you were loved by many. Rest in power.
