Cecily Tyson dedicated her career to portraying resilient African American women on the stage and the screen. She brought humanity and dignity to the roles she played, showing vast audiences that “Black is Beautiful.”

Throughout her life she starred in more than 100 film, television, and stage productions. At 88, Tyson became the oldest person to win a Tony Award for her performance in The Trip to Bountiful .  In 2013 she received a Kennedy Center honor for “a lifetime of powerful performances in roles that shattered boundaries for African American women.” In 2014, President Barack Obama gave her a Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2018, she received an honorary Oscar. She also received numerous NAACP Image Awards and the NAACP’s highest honor, the Spingarn Award.

She once said, “It amuses me when people say, ‘Oh, my God, you’ve done so much.’ But it isn’t that I’ve done so much. It’s that what I have done has made a real impact, and I’d rather have it that way.”

Suzan-Lori Parks is a true architect of the American stage. As the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, she didn’t just join the conversation—she rewrote the entire script.

From her groundbreaking "Rep & Rev" (repetition and revision) style to her monumental 365 Days/365 Plays project, Parks explores the intersections of history, race, and humanity with a sharp wit and an even sharper intellect.

She reminds us that history isn’t just something that happened; it’s something we are constantly performing, questioning, and recreating.

August Wilson was a pivotal American playwright renowned for his American Century Cycle, a ten-play series chronicling the African American experience decade-by-decade in the 20th century, making him crucial for giving voice to Black history and culture, earning him two Pulitzer Prizes for plays like Fences and The Piano Lesson, and solidifying his legacy as a giant in American theater. His work used music, folklore, and powerful dialogue to preserve and celebrate Black heritage, connecting generations and portraying Black life on its own terms.

Glass slippers are back in style.

AUDITIONS for Cinderella are NEXT WEEK! December 10 and 11, 3-6pm. You only have to come to one day, but you CAN come to both if you wish.

THERE IS A MANDATORY MEETING ON MONDAY, DEC. 15 FROM 3-5. If you cannot be at that meeting, I cannot use your talents on this show.

ACTORS -

Please prepare to sing 30-60 seconds of a song from a Golden Age Broadway show that demonstrates your vocal range. Your track should be available on YouTube. You HAVE to use music - a capella auditions will not be considered.

DON'T FORGET TO ACT WHILE YOU SING! I'm evaluating more than just your voice. You ARE allowed to take the mic off the stand and move around. Give me a performance!

I WILL be casting plenty of ensemble and non-speaking animal roles. I will be casting four mice, a fox, and a racoon at minimum. There are also opportunities available for puppeteers - we need someone to puppeteer the Giant and the Dragon at a minimum.

As always, there WILL be cold reading sides from the script.

There are two male characters and two female characters who have to play romance - Prince Topher, Cinderella, Jean-Michel, and Gabrielle. IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE PLAYING ROMANCE, please make sure you note than on your audition form.

TECH CREW -

We will need, at minimum:

An assistant stage manager, ideally one who can count music, who will backstage manage during the show (get actors to places, etc.)

A master electrician to run the light board

TWO follow spot operators (we have two brand new follow spot and we will definitely be using both for this show)

A microphone manager - you will be in charge of changing mic packs between actors during the show

A capable wardrobe crew - both Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother will have magical costumes that have to be rigged carefully. All characters will have at least two costumes.

A props crew that will double as extra knights, townspeople, and guests at the ball.

A house manager and ushers to greet and seat our guests, and also ensure the aisles stay clear - there will be a LOT of characters running through the house.

Crew can sign-up at auditions.
