Today, many will gather with family, enjoy a day off, and welcome the start of summer. But before the celebrations begin, we pause to remember.

Memorial Day is not simply about those who served - it is about those who never came home. The sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, husbands, wives, and friends whose sacrifice left an empty chair at a table and a permanent ache in the hearts of those who loved them.

Freedom has a cost. For some families, that cost is carried every day.

Today, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. We remember their courage, their selflessness, and the loved ones who continue to carry their memory forward.

And for those of us who know what it means to grieve someone deeply, Memorial Day reminds us of something sacred: love does not end when a life does. We keep remembering. We keep telling their stories. We keep speaking their names.
May we never take their sacrifice for granted.

🇺🇸 To those who gave everything - and to the families who continue to carry that sacrifice - we remember, we honor, and we are forever grateful. 🇺🇸

There are families quietly carrying the unimaginable.
This June 26–28, we’re hosting a Child Loss Family Retreat - a space intentionally created for families who have experienced the loss of a child to step away from the weight of everyday life and step into rest, connection, and gentle healing.
We know many of these families won’t raise their hand themselves… so we’re asking you.
💛 Do you know a family who could benefit from time away, surrounded by people who understand?
💛 A family who deserves space to breathe, be cared for, and reconnect?
You can nominate them to attend this special retreat here:
👉 Nominate a Family | Phoenix Haven https://www.phoenix-haven.org/nominate-a-family
Every nomination is handled with care, sensitivity, and deep respect for each family’s story.
Let’s come together to surround these families with love, support, and hope.

Trauma leaves so many lasting effects. Phoenix Haven at Serenity on the River hosts family retreats to identify, understand, support and help heal from these effects.

Not all trauma looks the same…
but it all impacts how your body responds to stress.

Acute trauma
A single event. An accident, loss, or moment that overwhelmed your system.

Chronic trauma
Ongoing exposure. Living in stress, fear, or instability over time.

Complex trauma
Repeated experiences, often in close relationships, that shape how you see yourself and others.

System-induced trauma
Harm that comes from systems meant to help, where trust was broken.

Different experiences…
but they all can leave your nervous system stuck in survival mode.

That’s why you may feel triggered even when you’re “safe.”

Your body remembers.

🛠️ Grounding Tool (When You’re Triggered)

When you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or activated… try this:

5-4-3-2-1 Reset

• 5 things you can see
• 4 things you can touch
• 3 things you can hear
• 2 things you can smell
• 1 thing you can taste

Slow your breathing as you go.

This helps bring you out of survival mode
and back into the present moment.

Which one do you resonate with most?

👇 You’re not alone in this

Serenity on the River has been a little quiet over here … but not for lack of activity 🌿 we are in planting and prep season - seeds and flower baskets growing, grounds cleanup for trails, clearing to move in cabins!!! and simple goodness all around 😊
Stop by to browse our indoor + outdoor plants, pick up fresh eggs, homemade goodies, and whatever seasonal produce is ready 🪴🥚🫙🥖🫐🍅🥬
Or… just come sit a while. Porch and deck are always open when the weather allows ☀️☕️🪑
Because of planting season and ongoing projects, we do ask that you call ahead before stopping by. We’d love to have you! 615-965-8994

We’re getting ready for something really special this June - our very first Family Retreat, geared towards those who have lost a child 🤍

One of the biggest parts of this retreat is creating meaningful, hands-on activity sessions where families can connect, process, and simply be together. These moments matter so much, and we’re working hard to make them thoughtful, comforting, and even a little fun in the midst of heavy seasons.

We’ve put together a wish list of items that will help bring these sessions to life, and we’d love your support. You can purchase items directly from the list and have them shipped to us, or feel free to grab similar items in your own way if you prefer - every contribution makes a difference! Thank you so much to those who have already purchased items! We appreciate your gifs so much!

More than anything, you’re helping us create space for families to slow down, share moments, and feel seen and supported. Thank you for being part of this with us - it truly means more than we can say 💛
