One thing I LOVE to see in electronic music is a sense of songwriting and composition. Lyrics are cool, but there are other ways of telling a story or making a point rather than writing a traditional song. Vocal samples are dope. I think we all like those fuzzy TV captions and movie lines. I love when an artist samples them or uses the sample in a creative way to add some extra emotion or inform the audience of their attitude on the matter. Every song title is a chance to convey an idea and give a concept to our tracks. A simple title paired with the right track is all you need to tell a compelling story sometimes. There are other ways like using signature or recognizable sounds to evoke a certain memory. Video game samples come to mind. Even just atmosphere and melody can do it. A few artists across any genre that have really inspired my songwriting are Hucci, Elliot Smith, Sonic Youth, Tipper, and Gil-Scott Heron.
As far as being a DJ goes, I think our first job is to be knowledgeable of music, in general. After all, our artform is a kind of musical graffiti. The deeper the pool of ideas we have to work from the more creative we can be. Of course, this also helps as a musician and producer. So, what better reason to lay about all day binging album after album, right?!? 😜👽💚
