One thing I LOVE to see in electronic music is a sense of songwriting and composition. Lyrics are cool, but there are other ways of telling a story or making a point rather than writing a traditional song. Vocal samples are dope. I think we all like those fuzzy TV captions and movie lines. I love when an artist samples them or uses the sample in a creative way to add some extra emotion or inform the audience of their attitude on the matter. Every song title is a chance to convey an idea and give a concept to our tracks. A simple title paired with the right track is all you need to tell a compelling story sometimes. There are other ways like using signature or recognizable sounds to evoke a certain memory. Video game samples come to mind. Even just atmosphere and melody can do it. A few artists across any genre that have really inspired my songwriting are Hucci, Elliot Smith, Sonic Youth, Tipper, and Gil-Scott Heron.

As far as being a DJ goes, I think our first job is to be knowledgeable of music, in general. After all, our artform is a kind of musical graffiti. The deeper the pool of ideas we have to work from the more creative we can be. Of course, this also helps as a musician and producer. So, what better reason to lay about all day binging album after album, right?!? 😜👽💚

A while ago I said I would talk about music more so here goes....

some reflections on noise///

When I was a kid I was really into punk and no wave/noise-rock. "No wave" was a play on the term "New Wave" used to describe this seemingly clean cut, new version of rock'n'roll. No Wave was more atonal and, while not as aggressive as hardcore punk, it maintained its' rough edges with pride. Early Sonic Youth began my journey.

In high school I got to see xBxRx, a trio using very cheap guitars, loads of distortion, and color coordinated matching outfits and equipment to deliver a frantic combination of hell cat screeches with crude atonal melodies, blast beats, and speedy punk drumming. They even had color-coordinated foam microphone screens. It was part performance art, part punk concert. One of my friends decided not to go because they saw a video of the band shouting at the audience to sit down on the floor during their show.

The show was every bit as chaotic as their recordings. However, their original drummer was out due to reasons I can't remember. This HUGE dude was there subbing in, he must have been 6'5'' and was playing a mic'ed up child's drum set. I found out he was THE Weasel Walter.. As far as I can tell he is the first person who interpreted Sun-Ra's free jazz in this kind of punk, aggressive expression. He was in a band called The Flying Luttenbachers who were pioneers in noise rock, free jazz, and no wave in the 90's.

Noise music was formed at the busy intersection of soul, funk, punk, rock, and Sun Ra's Free Jazz, but the underlying commonality is this vicious assault on harmony, tradition, and ultimately authority. The best noise music rejects the normal, prescribed, and mundane to see the beauty in imperfection and reminds me of the Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy in art.

I just put a new mix on SC. It starts off chill and vibey but then gets into a little more of my uptempo side. I was trying to keep quiet for the neighbors which made scratching really hard to hear, so i kept it minimal this go 'round. I know I'll have to make a scratch centered mix sometime soon for the heads tho.....

Had a wonky week cuz of meds but only a couple days lost to symptoms. I've been writing a lot more tho which im stoked about. My writing is like the base layer....the source material that inspires my music. Been cooking up some drums for a few originals, I always build a motif by selecting samples and lay down the core drum beats first.
