Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day? It’s a common misconception that Americans have about today! However, today is a reason to celebrate!

Cinco de Mayo is a day of celebration for the Hispanics and is a tradition that takes place on May 5 to mark the date that Mexico defeated the Second French Empire in the Battle of Puebla in 1862, under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza, a Texas native. The Mexicans’ morale was boosted by their win over the bigger and better armed French army with a smaller, less well-equipped Mexican force, which included 500 other Tejanos.
The anniversary of the victory is primarily celebrated in the Mexican state of Puebla, where the holiday is celebrated as El DĂa de la Batalla de Puebla. (The Day of the Battle of Puebla)

What most do not realize is that the “Battle of Puebla” is celebrated just as much if not more in the United States than it is in Mexico! Cinco de Mayo became popular in the United States in the 1960s when Chicano activists started seeking for a means to celebrate their heritage. Today is a day to celebrate Mexican culture/Mexican Americans and show respect towards their roots and heritage!

The Odd will be celebrating with specialty drinks for TODAY ONLY! Come on out and try some of our concoctions thought up and created by our bartenders! We can’t wait to see ya!
