Arlington Arts

Arlington Arts Arlington Cultural Affairs is a division of Arlington Economic Development.

By offering arts groups affordable space and services in lieu of large cash grants, Arlingon Cultural Affairs has fostered one of the most vibrant arts scenes in the DC metropolitan area. By creatively using its status as a government body to leverage resources for the arts, the County demonstrated that artists and government can work together, and transformed its own cultural landscape in the pro

cess. The first and only arts organization to win the Innovations in American Government Award from Harvard University and the Ford Foundation, Arlington Cultural Affairs is now a national model for regional arts support. Arlington Cultural Affairs provides programs and services that build community and transform lives by enhancing enjoyment and understanding of, and participation in, the arts. The unit is a Division of the Arlington County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources.

On Saturday, September 13 between 8am-1pm, find us at the Rock ‘n’ Recycle at the Trades Center (4300 29th Street South) for the Arlington Art Truck project, “Patch or Swap: A Textile Rescue Lab by Roxana Alger Geffen”.

We have all had clothes that we loved and lost—to coffee stains, rips or years of wear. This project is about rescuing those well-loved things and making them wearable again. Sculpture and collage artist Roxana Alger Geffen, will show you simple ways to mend your clothes in a visible but cool way and give you some supplies to get started, either at the Arlington Art Truck or at home. If you decide that you don’t need another project, you can also swap a tired garment for something on our Swap Rack, leaving a short description and story about the piece or simply take a garment and leave us a story about a favorite outfit from your past.

The community partner for this project is the Arlington Visual Arts Studio Tour (AVAST). Every year on one weekend in September, Arlington artists open their studio doors to the public, organized by AVAST. Come visit the Arlington Art Truck and pick up a map of the open studio tour and visit the artists on the weekend of September 27 and 28, 2025.

About the event: A family favorite returns as the Solid Waste Bureau opens its doors at the Trades Center in Shirlington. Explore the world of recycling, trash-to-energy and other key environmental services. See the big work machines (The Rock Crusher! The Tub Grinder!) up close, sit in the driver’s seat and meet the experts who keep Arlington clean and sustainable. Dozens of hands-on learning stations, take-home art, environmentally friendly giveaways, music, and more. Rain or shine.
