Lubber Run Amphitheater

Lubber Run Amphitheater FREE performances running from June into August. Fridays and Saturdays at 8, Sundays at 11. "All the world's a stage, and Lubber Run is ours."

Arlington's cherished outdoor performance space will once again play host to great shows this summer. The Lubber Run Amphitheater Foundation was created in 2011 with donations to ensure that the amphitheater would continue to exist. We work alongside Arlington County Cultural Affairs to funding various activities and shows over the years. This year, 2022, we invested in the following:

-A grant to

the 3 theater groups to pay for the royalty fees for to be
able to perform Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat
-The design and printing of the Guitar Fan give-away
-The ice cream social opening night for Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dream Coat (early August)

From 2011-2021 LRAF funded:

-The 2019 50th year celebration
-A $100 appreciation stipend gifted to all 25 performers from 2019 to assist them during the COVID shut-down of 2020
-Multiple performances, specifically shows for kids, and co-funded various evening performances
-Many Ice cream socials
-The children's clay art workshop after the LRAF-funded animal show including free pizza
-Guitar/schedule fans most years since 2011

LRAF thanks neighborhood lawyers for setting up the 501c3 pro bono and keeping us up to date. Thank you to all the volunteers and
to ALL who have and continue to contribute! Please Note: As a venue programmed and managed by Arlington County, Lubber Run Amphitheater Concerts may be cancelled due to inclement weather on relatively short notice, in accordance with the County’s public safety procedures. For the most up-to-date information on weather-related cancellation of postponement, please visit ArlingtonArts.org or the ArlingtonArts page.

While another season has come and gone, Arlington Arts has a cool pair of upcoming music performances that you and your neighbors might find interesting. Both projects center on the histories of famed women musicians from South Arlington! We hope you’ll share the info and poster attached (the poster has a QR code which can be scanned for info). Hyperlinks to information are embedded in this email.

While the fact that soul icon Roberta Flack was raised in Arlington’s ‘Green Valley’ neighborhood is rather well documented, did you know that one of the most acclaimed all-female big bands of the Swing era – The International Sweethearts of Rhythm - lived in Arlington?

Now, two contemporary women musicians from Arlington uplift the legacies of these legends with a weekend showcase at Theatre on the Run, at 3700 South Four Mile Run Drive, in Arlington, Virginia 22206. The world premiere of Suite for Sweethearts by Amy K Bormet takes place on Friday, October 3, 2025. The following evening hear Killing Me Softly: A Love Letter to Roberta Flack by vocalist Munit Mesfin and the First Take Band offers on Saturday, October 4, 2025. There are two shows each evening, at 7:00pm and 9:00pm. Reservations for this FREE event are available on Eventbrite.

There were several all-female big bands of note during the 1930’s and 1940’s, but the International Sweethearts of Rhythm was unique. As the ‘international’ in their title was meant to imply, the band was multi-racial (hence the ‘International’ sobriquet), which was very unusual for the time. The band was considered by many experts to be the best of the all-female big bands of the era, touring nationally in major venues (such as the Apollo in Harlem, and DC’s Howard Theater) and dance halls.

Receiving one of the top awards from the National Endowment for the Arts American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant, Arlington Arts’ launched a competitive Artists In Residence (AIR) Grant which awarded $20,000 grants to four different Arlington artists. The winning artists-in-residence are: Jazz musician Amy K. Bormet (director of the Women in Jazz Festival); visual artist MasPaz (Federico Frum); visual artist Adam Henry; and vocalist Munit Mesfin (Sefanit Mesfin-Champagne). The work of the two visual arts winners will be realized over the coming months.
